I will be working in White Plains? Will prob have a car and have a budget of about 3-4000 US maybe more if i dont need to go private school route.

Can you tell me where the good Universities or Colleges are

Thanks JCT
Anna Maria - If you are going to be working in White Plains, then I would suggest considering living in Westchester County, New York. Scarsdale is a very upscale and expensive suburb, similar to Greenwich in prestige. Schools are excellent there. I am not sure if you will be able to find rental there in your price range. You might want to post your question on the New York boards for answers. I will tell you that there are a number of towns in Westchester that have excellent schools and beautiful neighborhoods. Good luck, Jay

Really, what's up with that? Is this a real trend or just a funny coincidence?

It seems to be a trend - interestingly on both boards - before I actually left Cali - I was on the Cali boards - and there were tons of people leaving the tri-state area for Cali. And what seems to be an equal amount of Cali people moving to the Northeast.

Jsut found this over on the Real Estate Professionals Board. Greenwich Zip Code 06831 is the wealthiest in the country. This basically covers the northern and western parts of town. Lots of beautful estates and "gentleman farms". Here is the complete list:

1. Greenwich, CT 06831 - $2,983,000

2. Newport Beach, CA 92661 - $2,500,000

3. Paradise Valley, AZ - $1,850,000

4. Avalon, NJ 08202 - $1,687,500

5. Cambridge, MA 021138 - $1,395,000

6. Glen Head, NY 11545 - $1,150,000

7. Islamorada, FL 33036 - $1,150,000

8. Chevy Chase, MD 20815 - $1,043,000

9. Hinsdale, IL 60521 - $950,000

10. Bellevue, WA 98004 - $950,000

Thanks dragonten fopr the information. Jay

Anna Maria - I thought you said in one of your posts that you would be working in White Plains. White Plains is in westchester County which is in New York State and I thought you should post there to get towns in the area that are good. The towns I know in the area are New Rochelle, Mamaroneck, Rye, Port Chester, Harrison, Rye Brook, Larchmont, Irvington, Hastings, Tarrytown, Dobbs Ferryand Croton. Some of these are nicer than others and the New York Boards will probably be able to help you find a town to fit your needs. good luck, Jay

Hi Jay

Thanks , I must say that u r always really very polite and courteous on this forum. Yes i will be working in white plains but where i live and where my son goes to school is the priority, i dont mind commuting and Greenwich, Scarsdale and Stamford and Rockford County are places people told me are good to live. Westchester was also mentioned but Greenwich, Scarsdale appealed to me. Its very confusing, i am gonna come to NY for a week in October and check out all the areas but i just thought i would narrow them down before i got to NY.

your help really appreciated

Thanks. Anna Marie

Westchester is an option to, you sound well informed, what would u suggest

I believe these are the "average" sales prices in these zip codes. Jay

Anna - Thank you for the compliment. I know how hard it is to understand new areas and find your way around, but I think with a little research, you will be fine. There are many towns in Westchester County that are as nice as the towns in Connecticut. I think I mentioned some that I knew in my last post. If you go to the New York board of this website, people there should give you suggestions on towns to look at. I have heard good things about Rye Brook, Harrison, Irvington, Dobbs Ferry and Croton, but again check that with people on the other boards.

One thing I will suggest is that you do not look at homes in Rockland County (I think you called it Rockford). White Plains is located east of the Hudson River and Rockland is located to the west. Crossing the river is very difficult due to heavy traffic during rush hour. People do it because Rockland County is cheaper than Westchester, but with the amount you are willing to pay you can and should look in Westchester. Jay
