Milford Life?
Can anyone tell me about Milford regarding the types of people, events, etc. that we can expect to find there? We are middle/upper middle class, dems, early 30's and no kids yet. Our interests are sidewalk cafes, dog parks, sailing, music, vintage stuff, indie theater, eclectic food, coffee, neighborhood pubs, and so on. Are we going to be out of place because we aren't super wealthy or bored because there is no "scene" in Milford? I heard that we might enjoy South Norwalk and Greenwich but I'm worried that those will be too expensive and too country-club and we won't meet people we really connect with. Are there any other areas that we might like? We are heading up there this weekend and want on what areas we should focus/what to look expect.

The people in Milford are pretty average and middle class. I live in the next town over, West Haven. I moved here from NY about a year ago and I fit right in. Milford is definitly not "super rich" and I'm sure you will fit in. In downtown Milford there is some nightlife. There are neighboorhood bars, coffee shops, resturaunts, and anything you can expect from a downtown area. One bar in particular( I forget the name) as frequent live bands. New Haven is a short 15 minute drive away and it has a lot to offer. Lots of ethnic food, bars, clubs, cafe's, etc. Milford is also right on the Long Island Sound so there are water activities. There is also a train that will take you to New York City(hour and a half ride) and there are endless amounts of things to there. Hope that helps!

So do you prefer West Haven over Milford? Is one a little hipper than the other? I know that sounds corny, but I've got nothing to lose by asking. What about New Haven?

West Haven is less desirable than Milford, higher taxes, dumpier town. I grew up in Milford and have lived in West Haven. West Haven is by no means hip and many parts aren't exactly pretty. Locals refer to it as Waste Haven if that is any indication. I am not saying the whole town is crappy, I lived near the Milford/Orange border of West Haven in a very nice neighborhood. If you stay in that area through Jones Hill Rd. it is nice.
From your description it sounds like Milford is exactly what you are looking for.

It sounds like you may be getting ready to take it down a notch from the young club hopping scene and Milford is a great place if you want to start a family and settle down. Milford is a great small city that has a lot to offer but it is a little on the quiet side and is geared more toward families than singles. But Milford is located near New Haven and there is a lot of what you are looking for there so you could enjoy the best of both worlds. Milford also has a broad range of people so I wouldn't worry about fitting in. Just be prepared to have to work a bit to make friends. New Englanders are a bit reserved so you may have to be patient with people. Thye are firendly but may take a while to warm up. Good luck with your search. Jay

seems like ideal fit for you!
Dear friend,
I am a Milford resident myself moved from Hamden, CT and we(my wife and I ) and now a new born son wanted to live in Fairfield county , but then we eneded up buying in Milford.
Couple of reasons.
1>It has nice beaches, parks for family recreation.
2>You have a nice downtown thing going on for Milford Green, where new resturants and pubs are plentiful.
3>When we moved here from CT , i thought New Englanders were reserved..i moved from very friendly upstate NY, but then after moving to Milford, i can't describe how friendly this town is to people.
4>Also, you have a train ride to Grand Centeral and Stamford. It seems like it is well connected...
5>The school system is above average and lastly you have a nightlife in Milford as well as New Haven and you will find so many like minded people around your age group
Overall it offeres best of everything and it has really come out as one of the best place to live near New Haven or alternative to Fairfield County...i have seen atleast two families in just last one month alone moved to Milford from priced out fairfield county....
oh and have i mentioned mall?
Trust me, its a real deal...i have done lot of research before buying a house as my wife and i are in late 20's and wanted to start a family...
Good Luck, CoolStrom
