I presently live in LI (Nassau County) and am moving to CT with my 3 kids.

I work in Midtown, NYC and would like to keep the commute to around 1-1.5 hours...

I am looking for a good school district and a home where the kids have room to play but not be in the middle of nowhere.

Thank you!

How much can you spend on a house?

Greenwich, Darien, New Canaan, Wilton and Westport are the closest suburban towns to NYC, but they're also extremely expensive. Fairfield is more affordable, but you're looking at a long commute.

Sorry, I should have clarified. I am looking to rent, not buy.

You can find a nice town with a good school district within that 1 hr - 1.5 hr to NYC timeframe. Finding something within your budget, however, is something else. Have you decided on that? Reason I ask is to find something within that distance of Midtown will probably put you in Fairfield County, one of the most expensive places in the US. I know Nassau County ain't exactly cheap these days, but still

For 3k, you can probably get a 2 bedroom in Greenwich (maybe even 3). If you want to go up the line a bit to Westport or Wilton, you can get more for your money.

I think you'll find the relaxed feel of Connecticut a breath of fresh air. I spent some time in Carle Place and couldn't wait to return to Fairfield County.

Yeah basically. An older small house in the lesser parts of Greenwich, or an older house in Westport. New Canaan and Darien would be doubtful. Fairfield would give you a bit more, but your commute will be a bit longer than from Westport.

Any comments on Easton, Trumball (sp?), or Stamford (north)?

Thanks again!

Easton is beautiful but very rural. I don't know that you would find many rentals - worth a look though. Excellent schools.

Trumbull is a more suburban town, also beautiful with great schools. Highly recommended if you don't mind a 90 minute trip (each way) to Grand Central. Personally I'd suggest Fairfield over Trumbull due to Fairfield being closer to Metro North.

Stamford would be the closest to NYC of the three - much closer. It's a beautiful city and I think the schools are good for a city of that size. It's very diverse (racially, economically) so if you don't mind that, then I highly recommend it. Just know that your kids will likely be exposed to typical urban issues.
