I will be looking for a house for rent in Southbury and I'm wondering if there are any bad areas where I should stay away from and other things I should ask the landlords. I have 3 kids and I know that I don't need to worry about the schools there. I'm mostly worried about the heating, mold, bad streets, etc. I found a 3br/2bath for very cheap (1000) and it makes me wonder why so cheap (red flags).
There are no "bad" areas in Southbury. It is an affluent, safe community with great schools where you can't really go wrong.
The most working class area in Southbury is the section of Lakeside along the Housatonic River. There are some dirt roads in that area that make it undesirable IMO.
Does 1000 a month for a 3/2 house seem normal for that town? I don't know the area, but so far the lowest I have seen is 1500-1700. It makes me wonder why it is so cheap. I live in California and I'm trying to find a place before we move. I know, it's crazy.

It's tough to say. I think it seems a bit low. Generally, in western CT, if it's "cheap", it is for a reason. I know someone renting a 1br apartment in Southford (a section of Southbury) paying $900. Does it list an address, or square footage? If you don't want to give details on an open forum, you can DM me. I know the town fairly well.
It's not that there are bad areas, but there may be old houses that you wouldn't want to live in if they haven't been touched lately. Southbury gets pretty rural in parts.
I believe you're referring to Lakeside - they aren't redneck at ALL; they're lower income people living in small homes. If anything, they're hippies. One of my former adjunct professors lives over there. He's incredibly intelligent and a bit grungy, but not a redneck by any means.
Newtown and Oxford (other towns along the river) have that population too, in the sections of Sandy Hook and Riverside, respectively.
