Haha. I love seeing this thread pop up. I plan on bringing the wood closer to the house this weekend.

Did you get into a groove yet? I got into a routine of splitting in Spring, stacking far from house, then bringing it closer in the fall, and splitting more for next years load. I always try to be 1 year ahead so everything is seasoned and I'm not rushing to get more wood.

Cords I burned through:

2009-10: 2 and ran out in March(rookie mistake)
2010-11: 3.5 ran out in April
2011-12: 2 (Warm)
2012-13: 3 (bigger stove more efficient & oil was never used)

I used to do it with an axe but it started getting overwhelming. Imagine splitting all this by hand? LOL!

Do you think I have enough for this winter?

It's a great workout and there is just something about smashing a axe into a log and doing it manually. Its satisfying work. I get it delivered split but some of the pieces are too big for my stove.

What most people dont understand is that modern wood burning stoves and inserts are very effecient and firewood is very environmentally friendly. Its renewable energy. Mine has a 78 percent efficiency rating. Meaning 78 percent of the heat energy from the wood is heating my house. My insert is certified by the EPA and produces very low emissions. There is almost no smoke produced from my chimney.

Compared to heating oil which has to be extracted, probably shipped and then delivered wood is the way to go if your willing to do the work.

From a cost perspective they say 1 cord of firewood is equal to about 150-175 gallons of heating oil. I get my wood for free but even if you had to buy the firewood at 150 a cord. The savings is massive.

I haven't gotten the stove in "stove mode" yet...but have had quite a few fires these cold nights And of course, my boys just lay in front it and watch...better than the TV I guess

Awesome! Love those pics. Gives you that good old country feel outside and a nice cozy feel inside. Looks like your set for this winter.

Yeah, kids... and even me just stare and stare at the fire. Something relaxing and nostalgic about it. I was tempted to light but did not... Even brought the kindling and some pieces inside which felt completely weird since its usually mid October I do that

Something tells me we'll all need heat at the end of this month around October 3rd

I typically hand split 3-4 cord a year as well. I think it sounds like alot more work then it really is if you spread it out throughout the year.

I am going to try to hold off till at least october before staring a fire.

I know this guy is ready for stove season.

Exactly! I usually have would delivered in April/May, split and stack early September through mid-November for the following year, and move the seasoned wood to the front porch in November (nice and close and covered for those bitter days coming )

chris410, I'm diggin' the Holz Hausen!
