I'm surprised by the low ridership of the Danbury and Waterbury lines. What is supposed to happen that will cause the ridership on these lines to grow so much?

Commercial and residential development around the stations?
More frequent service?
Added stations?
Expanded parking?

Developments , more service , a few more stations , no big parking expansions.... The lack of Service , and TOD along with high fares to NY have caused to low ridership on the Danbury & Waterbury branches. The whole Fare system on the NY systems needs Septa based. Which charges you for how far you've traveled instead of by Fare zones.

I was a rider on the Danbury branch (out of Cannondale) until a couple of years ago when my son was born. My husband still commutes daily to NYC via Cannondale. It is a long ride, but during a rush hour it's a single seat ride (no changing trains in So. Norwalk.) However, this train line only "works" when you have a predictable schedule. Service is simply too infrequent during the day and after 7:00 p.m. Sometimes there is a two-hour gap between trains. So on days when my husband thinks he may leave work early (e.g., getaway days, like the Friday of Memorial Day weekend) or work late (couple times a week, or if he wants to hit happy hour or a Yanks game) he drives to Stamford in the morning and commutes from there. But where we live (Weston) what else can you do? The parking at the Westport station is ridiculous and the amount of time we save riding the train would be eaten up by the drive to the station. Plus, free parking at Cannondale.

Most of our friends here in Weston, Wilton and Ridgefield who commute to the city either go from Westport (paying daily rates, as they are still waiting for parking passes), drive to Stamford (or Somers), or drive all the way into the city (nuts.) They're generally just too aggravated by the lack of service on the Danbury branch to consider it.

My husband is from Long Island and I grew up in NJ, and we both agree that Metro North is significantly more reliable and pleasant than LIRR and NJ Transit (yes, even on our antiquated branch). I just wish they would provide more-frequent service here.

Well that sounds like my line pre-improvements. You were screwed if you missed your train , now inbound trains run every 20-25mins from 5:30-9:30am , and every 2hrs after that. NJT / MNRR has really worked on improving the line , there now working on improving outbound service for the 10,000+ employees who work along the line. The same is in the works for the Danbury line , it won't be exactly like my line in the beginning. But it will be one day , when the line is extended to New Milford , New Stations and Electrified. The improvements to the line and more sidings should be completed by 2015 , then New stations and Extension by 2025. Electrification would come last , if at all. It would depend on how high ridership is , hopefully the Improvements will get Stamford and Norwalk bound commuters to use the trains.... That happen along my line after the improvements , ppl started taking the train to towns and cities other then NYC.
