georgia.s is on a distinguished road
Default From Southern CA

I am from southern California and moved to CT for graduate school. I feel that I have moved to a different country with a different culture. I can tell you that the University system is good although the higher you go up in prestige or education level the snobbier it gets. Where as in southern CA, it seems to be more laid back. On the East coast I have found that pedigree reigns supreme. In southern CA, there is a large emphasis put on appearance and it is superficial in that way. People are friendlier there because it is a part of the culture, it doesn't mean they are nicer and it also doesn't mean they are less genuine. I have met plenty of driven back- stabbing people here. In general it is difficult for new people to make friends in CT, people are very stand-offish until they get to know you. Although in Boston and New York (yes NYC) I have found people to be more pleasant. If you have patience, people will come around, and truth be told, people are the same everywhere.

Being from New York, I have concluded the same. Even holding a door for someone results in the occasional "I can get it myself" which, after 20 years of being in Connecticut, is still shocking.
