I read this whole thread and understand completely being I'm a fellow New Jerseyite. It's difficult for somebody not from our area to understand of the residents overall mentality here.
I'm sorry that you're being judged here in the end which is more than you bargained for, as that guy doesn't know what heck he's talking about.
I wish you well in finding your future residence!

Yeah, judging a group of people by what they drive seems completely fair and ethical and moral.

There is another aspect that hasn't been mentioned yet. In the tri-state area during the late '80s and early '90s, owners of 5- and 7-series BMW's and high-end Mercedes would keep the price sticker on their car for the first month or so of ownership. If this isn't being pretentious, do you have another explanation?

I still see this here in New Jersey every once in a while.

Well that's above and beyond the any level of good taste. That's the definition of being pretentious!

My sister is guilty of doing this. She owned a 840 Volvo and was renting an apartment.

I own a 500 series Mercedes and an X5 BMW, and I am renting in CT. What does that mean? I can certainly afford a house, but choose to rent because of the market.

Also I did say that not everyone that drives these vehicles are affected like that in so many words in my last post. So, I'm not grouping 100% of any type of person.
I'm VERY approachable and VERY friendly that I can strike a conversation with any random stranger - so that's not the problem. The problem lies in the attitudes of most people I've tried to befriend with that have these type of material possessions only to be shunned. For the people that I'm friends with don't have this type "wealth" for the exception of 2 people that are well-off and that took many years to get to that number.
You have the right to your opinions and take on things as I do to mine. No harm no foul

I have seen it as well. It isn't you, it is just this pretentious attitude & overall obsession of material 'things' (whether or not they can actually afford it) that is endemic in the NYC metro area. I find that it is worse on Long Island & Westchester. Not to mention, but there is also this overt hostility & entilement that just because they are driving whatever or wearing whatever label on their ass means that they think they should have their ass kicked and go ballistic if you throw it back in their face.

So let me get this straight. If you drive a nice car, or wear nice clothing, you are a bad person? Jealous much?
