Hello, All:
I live in CT. I have read a number of guidelines on the CT DMV website and there are so many ambiguities leaving me stumped and more confused. I called the CT DMV and let me tell you how friendly they are (insert sarcasm here) and still couldn't get a straight answer. Essentially, I want to buy a brand new car from a dealership in Mass. due to significant savings. I understand Mass. doesn't issue temporary tags and apparently I need to get a temporary registration FIRST through the CT DMV. Here are my questions I hope someone out there can answer accurately:

If I am purchasing a brand new car from a dealership in Mass. but first need to obtain the temporary registration through the CT DMV in order to drive the car back to my home in CT, does that mean I literally have to drive to Boston; complete all of the paperwork with the dealership; drive back to the CT DMV with the paperwork (I.e. bill of sale, federal odometer document, etc.) to obtain the temporary CT registration; drive back to Boston with the temporary registration; then, drive the car back to my home in CT????

It seems that scenario is extreme. Is my interpretation correct or could the dealer fax me the documents the CT DMV requires for obtaining temporary registration or does the CT DMV need tr originals in order to obtain the temporary registration? Or, am I off base?

Thank you in advance!

I have bought two vehicles out of state (New York) and can tell you that your dealer should handle this completely. We drove to New York only once on both purchases. The first time they transferred the plates. The most recent time they issued a temporary registration in New York and sent the CT plates later. You are paying the dealer at LOT of money (despite their claims otherwise) so he/she should be dealing with this. Also note that if for some reason the car is not ready when you go to the dealer, all of the out of state dealers offered to drive the vehicle to me later. The last one met me half way because that was where I had to be anyway on that day. Good luck and don't be afraid to drive a REALLY hard bargain. Dealers make a lot of money that you do not see on even the invoice price. Jay
