Some people think that if the building is not brand new looking it is a dump. We get that comment all the time here. those buildings are fine. They are nice and typical of New England. If you want new or modern you need to move somewhere else where they just build things to look like New England but really are fake. Jay

If one is planning to move at Connecticut then there is no problem in doing it as this place is very good to stay for long time and wheather is very pleasant. One can even buy or rent at beautiful houses there instead of apartment.

jay i agree, one of the things i LOVE about the area are the older buildings, the old architectural details, the older homes (especially after being historically restored).
when i lived in bridgeport, i hated the city itself but LOVED wandering round looking at all the buildings, im a big fan of old buildings

If you are responding to my comment (not sure if you are) that the buildings need to be updated...that is simply all I meant. I did not say that it was a dump. I am a fanatic of old houses and buildings. I prefer old architecture over ANYTHING modern.

What I was referring to is near the area of Oxoford Hardware and a little before that. My husband and I comment on the buildings that look cast from the 70s with the flat roofs and need of refreshing like a paint job. To say that anyone was calling Oxford a dump is a huge exaggeration.

All that land that's for sale with the older building across from Oxford Paint & Hardware is where they are looking into building the new library, which hopefully will be soon.

Before Oxford Hardware? That's a nice stretch, so I don't really know what you're talking about. Even the Oxford Hardware building is very nice. There is a little plaza with a Dunkin Donuts, bank, Yoga Place, hairdresser, pizza parlor, etc. It has very nice architecture, wooden signs and does not have a flat roof. The plaza across the street is brand new but was made to look like the original one - again, wooden signs, and no flat roof.

I think you might be referring to the Board of Education building - it's the old CDC building and has been updated inside, but the outside is a bit dated. To claim that an entire town is outdated due to one building that is approximately 50'x50' is not fair IMO. But we can agree to disagree.

Edit to add - Actually I think you are referring to the stucco plaza set back away from the road with a doctor's office, ice cream shop, Subway and doctor's office. I agree, it's not that nice, but it's not really outdated. There are plans to redo that plaza to add a Trader Joes or a regular grocery store. Not sure where that stands in this economy though.

If you are looking for excellent schools, Newtown is supposed to be very good, but Southbury's High School has been listed as one of the top high schools in CT. I know a couple who moved there from Newtown because of their frustration with the town's inertia when it came to improving the schools. Just a thought....
