I understand foxy's point about places to hang, but if rents are reasonable in black rock, you can be in downtown fairfield faster than most people that live in fairfield. and there are quite a few things to do right in black rock

If you want to save money, rent in Bridgeport. Cheapest area in Fairfield County and you can find a nice place in a nice area.

Bridgeport is crime ridden, yes, but you gotta go looking for trouble to be a part of it. If you live in the North end or Black Rock sections the only thing you may have to worry about is motor vehicle theft or a burgalars.

It's not like the OP is going to rent in Marina Village.

Good sections of the North End, Black Rock and Brooklawn have crime rates no higher than adjacent sections of Fairfield.

I agree with the posters who say that there are several nice places to live in Bridgeport and it could be a great place to live as long as you settle on the right neighborhood and get a good price. However, I have been thinking of moving back home to Bridgeport to save money so my mother did a little research on rental pricing--the best price she could find in the residential North End was $1200/mo. Prices in nice areas seem to be inflated by college students attending Sacred Heart U. (in the North End) and Fairfield U. (in Black Rock.) For the same price you could rent a tiny cabin, in-laws apartment, guest house, or 2nd floor in someone's home in Redding/Fairfield/Ridgefield/possibly New Canaan--you would just have to do the searching on Craig's List and in local papers. I would think that your decision would come down to whether you prefer in-town living (Bridgeport) over secluded living (locations I mentioned).

NO, I would never recommend craigslist to anyone....it has a history of scams and is not reputable. Use a local paper or a realtor.

I do not agree. You do have to be careful when using craigslist.com but there are many reputable listings there. Jay

I have rented two apartments in Connecticut and four in Austin with Craigslist. In the past I have used it to find someone to rent my own condo, as well as found my last job (before I started my technical training business) -- an executive level position with a IT firm in Austin -- through Craigslist. I also used Craigslist to find my current executive assistant and filled 20 full time technical positions using the service in Austin. All of my interactions with Craigslist have been completely successful.

If you avoid ads that sound scammy you'll have no problems.

The written classifieds seem to have shrunk down to nothing due to Craigslist. If you don't want to use Craigslist I'd second the advice to use a Realtor.

Agreed. I have used Craigslist for many things (an apartment, purchasing misc. items, helping a younger relative job hunt, vacation rentals). You do have to be careful, as you would anywhere, but it's a really useful tool.
