Colchester is a nice small New England town. It is pretty quite in general. There is a charming Town Green at its center with a number of small shops and restaurants surrounding it and there is little or no large strip style shoping cneters in or nearby. The is one large supermarket and a movie theater so Colchester sort of serves as the retail center for a number of rural towns in the area. The schools in town are considered to be good.
I For many years Colchester was an affordable location to live with some started type housing. In recent years, the town has been discovered and has had a lot of new housing built including new subdiviions with larger colonial type homes. Its location half way between Hartford and Norwich/New London has made it a good location for people who work in either area. Many of the people I know that live there really like it. I am sure others here could tell you more. Jay

Colchester population around 15,000 is a smaller New England town roughly located halfway between Hartford and New London on the coast.
Located in New London County. Although located in eastern Connecticut, it does not have some of the characteristics of other towns in the so called 'quiet corner of the eastern and north eastern part of the state.
It has grown in recent years, but other towns like Pomfret, and Putnam have seen a larger percentage growth.
The town has an attractive green, some older homes along Main St. Adequate though limited shopping. A Starbucks. A very nice Library, and a few decent restaurants. There is a nice movie plex.
It offers a low key life style, with easy access to rural areas, Connecticut beaches, and the Indian Casino's. Housing costs are reasonable.

Colchester is nice. It has the basics you need in town, like a grocery store (Stop & Shop), a few restaurants, a Starbucks, a pharmacy, etc. They also have some nice hiking/biking trails (The Airline Trail and Day Pond State Park). It was a pretty rural place, but as mentioned a lot of new development has rolled in. It still isn't a highly developed suburb, but a little more bustling than some of the surrounding towns. It's a good location since it is a good point to commute to either Hartford or down Norwich way. Recently there was a long thread on Colchester that might give you some more info:

I live in the next town over, if you have any specific questions about the area just ask!

I love it ^^ I live in this town and I have for 10 years. Everyone's so nice and the education system is great. There's no cliques at the high school which is very nice. Colchester is an awesome town ^^
