Default Public Commute from New Haven/Stamford to Long Island

hi,
I and my husband are planning to move to Connecticut shortly due to change in his job. I am currently working in Manhattan and am having a gud offer from a company in Long Island. Will it be practically feasible to travel everyday between Long Island and Connecticut using Public transport only.
If yes, Please send me the details

Since we both are new to that place any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The only real public transportation between LI and Connecticut that I know of is the ferries from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson. I know a couple of people that did this commute but only for a short time until they got a place in Connecticut. The ferry ride can be long and during bad weather can be canceled. Other than that, I think you would have to take the train to Manhatten and switch over to the Long Island Railroad. Good luck, Jay

Where will you commute to on Long Island? Unless you're willing to spend at least 2 hours commuting each way, I wouldn't commute to Long Island. First, you'd have to take Metro-North to Grand Central Station (monthly pass from Stamford around $275, significantly more from New Haven). Then, you'd need to go from Grand Central to Penn Station probably via subway. There are no direct subway routes between the two stations. You'd have to transfer and walk a few blocks. Then, you'd take the Long Island Railroad.

The commute from Stamford to Grand Central is 45 minutes. The commute from New Haven is about 100 - 110 minutes. The subways are unpredictable so you may miss your train to go to Long Island. I'm not sure how often the trains run since most people on LI commute into Manhattan, not out of it.

I think it would be a very long and expensive commute.

hi,
Thanx...for your replies. I was looking on net for various commute options and could not find very good connections either. Someone told me about ferry rides so I wanted to check the feasibility of that .

The ferry is from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson: Welcome to The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company Website.
