Crime in Stamford
Hello,
CT is one of the places I am considering relocating to. I've heard Stamford has some areas to stay away from are there some good/ safe areas in Stamford? I would like to live in Fairfield county if I decide to relocate to CT. Are there any safe areas in this county you would suggest? Thanks!

Fairfield county has a few areas that are problematic; Some areas in Stamford, Norwalk and Stratford that some may consider rather borderline- but are by no means horrible. Stamford is a fine city with some very pleasant sections. Norwalk is more post industrial as is Stratford; with mostly middle class neighborhoods. Bridgeport has much more in the way of urban problems then these three cities. The rest of Fairfield county crime wise is very benign. Its the costs that can be rather lethal.

Thanks. Are there any towns close to the beach that are particularly safe?

Well Stamford has a very low crime rate - and has beach front
as does Norwalk. These cities by no means are crime havens. The remainder of the towns are very expensive; with possibly the exception of Fairfield which is 'just less expensive'.
Greenwich is mostly too expensive, as is Westport and Darien, both Have beach access. - A state park Sherwood Island is in Westport.
What are you seeking? And what amount of money do you feel you can spend? In that way I and others here can give more specific information.

Oh ok... hmmm. Well, I want to be close to the beach. A place that is safe. we have no kids, so schools is not a big concern. You've heard me whine about racism..we are an interracial couple, so we just want to feel that our race is not an issue where we live and that people are fine with blacks living in their town. I would like something suburban (not rural), but not too urban either. A pretty, green, suburban town, close to the beach and far from crime....if such a place exists. . I know that Greenich/Darien is ridiculously expensive, but I am not sure about price range right now. Safety come before price as far as I am concerned. Where in Stamford should I stay away from?

Inter racial couples do not face problems here. To be sure racists/bigots exist everywhere- but in CT, you should feel comfortable.
Fairfield county; as I have alluded to above does not have a crime wave- even in cities like Bridgeport. Stamford is a very safe city, which has much in the way of culture, restaurants, and property close to the shoreline.
Home and condo prices are high, but not like Westport, Darien and some of the other mega expensive. 'enclaves'. Also the towns along the shoreline are all suburban to semi urban.
You might also consider Milford, over the New Haven county line- which is a pleasant community many like.

To answer your question, Mystery, you would probably want to stay away from the South End, Waterside (between I-95, Congress Street, Stamford Harbor and the Greenwich Line) and the West Side (between I-95, the Rippowan River, West Broad Street and the Greenwich Line). Also, watch out for some areas in the Cove neighborhood (Wardwell St, Ursula Pl, Lockwood Ave, Myrtle Ave, Magee St) and the East Side (East Main Street and the Lawn Ave/Custer Ave area).

Nice info everyone. I just wanted to mention a few things...
Stamford has consistently been ranked very highly among the nation's safest cities. It has definitely claimed the #1 spot on at least one occasion. Since then, "The City That Works" has been their unofficial nickname.
I have family in Stamford, in a condo complex within walking distance of the plaza with the Tower Records, Coldstone Creamery, etc. In all my limited teenage years walking around and doing things in that city, I've never felt more safe in a city setting. I can't imagine things going wrong in that city.
In general, you can't go wrong anywhere in Fairfield county, except for Bridgeport (sans the Black Rock neighborhood) and maybe areas of downtown/southern Norwalk. The interracial matter shouldn't be a problem either.

Thank you all for your responses! I hope to visit CT within the next few months. Which airport should I fly into to get to Stamford?
