Smile What do you know about Colchester or Hebron?

This has been a great place to learn more about CT, thank you! Will you tell me more about Colchester or Hebron? Do people working in Storrs live here? Thank you in advance for any help!

Information on the CERC website shows that there are 141 people that work in Storrs that live in Hebron. It does not give how many live in Colchester but I would guess there is a similar amount. Most people in these towns commute to the Hartford area with some from Colchester commuting toward Norwich and New London.

Both towns are very nice and someone rural in character. Colchester has a nice town green with some shops around it. Hebron has a small center with strip-type shopping centers. I know people in both towns and they love it there.

If schools are immportant you should know that Colchester students perform around the state averages on the Connecticut Mastery and Connecticut academic Performance Tests. Hebron students perform well above the averages. You can find more informaiton on the schools in the links below. Jay

Default Thank you

I was hoping you would respond Jay! What is the CERC? Obviously, we are relocating from another state. We are still trying to figure everything out.

Are there places for family recreation? I am thinking of a YMCA or Recreation Center for swimming, exercise classes, etc.?

CERC is the Connecticut Economic Resource Center which has this type of information readily available. I am not sure what recreation is offered in these towns but each town has a website that should have this information. Just type in the town name in Google and their official website should come up. Neither Colchester nor Hebron has a swimming pool or YMCA.

Both towns have town owned rec fields for soccer/ baseball, picnics, etc.

Colchester has public outdoor tennis courts.

Hebron is closer to Storrs and with easier access.

Colchester has a better amenity level- large chain grocery store, hospital satellite clinic, movie theater, 9 hole public golf course, better shopping in general.

Hebron is the smaller or the two in population, much smaller than Colchester. Both are attractive towns, with a range of home values.

All depends on what you want and where you feel comfortable.

Willow wind is spot on. Both towns have a different feel to them. Spending some time driving around the two you will see what I mean. When I moved to the area, I originally looked into Hebron, Marlborough, and Colchester so I got to know the area well. I can tell you that most people regard the school district in Colchester to be inferior to the other towns, if that makes a difference to you. By no means is Colchester bad, that's just word on the street (I don't have kids, so before someone blasts me I am working off of hearsay!).

Edited to add: Storrs is a very easy commute from Hebron. Not only is it a pretty drive through farmland (if you take Rt. 66 to 6) but there is hardly any traffic. Add some time to that commute from Colchester, depending what part of town you are in.

Just a suggestion, you may want to consider looking into Mansfield. It is right there next to storrs, the schools are great and there is a community center there. If you were looking into Colchester/ Hebron because of family, its only about a 15 minute trip.

Thank you, we have considered that as well. Thank you to others for responding also. As it so happens, we are relocating... wait for it.... from the south. And, unfortunately, people have made rude comments about how we won't fit and that people aren't as friendly. So far, so good!

You are moving to Connecticut. You have to really, REALLY search for a bad school district (aka Bridgeport, Hartford, Waterbury). Colchester and Hebron both have phenomenal schools. Colchester is known for its prominence in early education K-5, is a bit weak in 6-8, but has a fantastic high school (Bacon Academy). Hebron has great schools as well, but shares resources with two other towns (Marlborough and Andover) to form a regional school district. Some like the idea, others don't. Colchester has better highway access, is rapidly developing, lots of amenities for a rural/suburban town. Hebron is more scenic, better maintained, and boasts a much shorter commute to Storrs. Can't go wrong with either town!
