I thought about Woodbury! It's pretty rural, feels more like a village than downtown, so that's why I didn't include it

I love going up in that area for summer drives. It is the antique capital of the state. Couple good restaurants too, I've been meaning to try Good News Cafe for a while.

have to agree with the "where's Ridgefield?"...a classic New England downtown with one of the most beautiful Main Streets in all of CT. Great restraunts, boutiques, candy store, bookstore, what more can you want in a small town? And a nearly entire lack of chain restraunts (save for Subway, Starbucks and Dunkins).

Downtown Norwich has SO much potential. It's so sad to see it in the state it is. It just looks, sad.

Yea but it's pretty skanky and honestly, it's just not the same as having open access. Hartford built the "plaza" that goes over 91 and while it helps tremendously, they really should have just buried the highway for a few hundred feet. You can see the difference between E Hartford riverfront and Hartford's. I91 makes all the difference IMO.

I totally agree, on top of the courthouse and long before it they put a housing project downtown. Smart move guys, how'd that work out for ya?

Once the Casino's go in, the city is going to boom! No really, it will!

LOL LOL LOL. All the Pfizer jobs moving to the area will help; so will the ever-stable sub base!

Agreed, these are both lovely rural towns that are basically extensions of litchfield county..

To add my 2 cents:

Best small town:
Kent
Essex

Best medium town:
Mystic
Middletown

Best large city:
New Haven
Stamford

honorable mentions that I personally love:
New Canaan, Madison.

Those that have tons of potential:
Norwalk--terrible layout and split focus. Main downtown neglected for years as Sono was the focus. Now, getting slowly better.
Bridgeport--great location. Will they ever get the gentrification ball rolling? I'm a big fan of potential here. Don't know if it will come soon or in 10 years.

Unfortunately, I would not hold your breath on that. :-/
