Glastonbury is a nice town. New Britain is not.

What about Newington and West Hartford? Are they "nice towns"? The busway would serve them too. Jay

The point is that in general, the people who commute to Hartford during rush hour "gridlocks" are white collar. These people would not be seen on a busline going from New Britain to Hartford. Won't happen - mark my words. Let me know how traffic is in 2020.

No, just tired of people coming on to this Board and making all these claims without any facts. That does sound cranky. Maybe it is the rain or maybe it is because I was up late watching the Husky's win. Jay

THANK YOU! This IMO gets to the heart of the issue. That and the fact that one has to park their car just to ride under 10 miles, maybe in theory it would work but in practice I just don't see it happening. I admit I've made my own personal biases as far as what I support in terms of public transit, but those aside I still don't see this as a viable option.

I realize if we didn't support this, we would lose federal funding and everyone's response to that is "and then we'll have to start from scratch!" So let's start from scratch! The idea behind the busway originated in the early '90s. Times have changed since then as far as how we view public transportation and the kind of PT that we want and need.

I'll actually back Jay up on this one - and FYI - I have ridden the bus into hartford when I worked there and from gritty Manchester of all places so I can actually tell you that there are plenty of Hartford and Travelers employees who are white collar and who pick up the bus in the burbs and get dumped off in downtown. It wasn't a matter of the gas savings, it has more to do with the driving aggravation of getting into downtown and the cost of parking for some employees. So those of you who have actually never done it, can save it.

Fact remains that a lot of people are already doing it....

Ironically Charlotte planned (around the same time the busway was) and built a self financed beautiful light rail system in 3 years with over 21,000 people using it a day and we can't get a bus to run between the ghetto's for 15 years without a pile of Federal money. What a joke.

The buses will originate outside of the busway and then feed into it. So there will be buses from West Hartford or Newington or Faarmington that will drive to the busway and get on to it to travel into Hartford. time will tell if it will work. And oh yeah, don't expect it to be an instant success. The day it opens you will not necessarily see a drastic drop ion traffic. It will take time like anything else. Jay

There are no fully self funded rail systems in this country. Even this one received federal money. Not even in Oregon where it is touted as the back bone of their transportation network. Jay
