You must be remembering it after the Benett family sold it to a national chain. It orginally was a nice discount department store with quality merchandise at reasonable prices. Think a cross between Target and Macy's. The sold fine china and crystal. When the family sold it off, the new managers tried to compete with Walmart and filled the place with cheap crap. So now it looks like we're stuck with Walmart and Target only. Do you think any of these will still be in business in 10 years from now? 20 years?

Well Walmart appeals to the people that like cheap merchandise and have been around for 50 years. People either love them or hate them. Target appeals to the people that like cheap stuff but with a bit more style. They seem to have a nice market going. Who knows where things will be in 20 years though. 20 years ago no one would have guessed large regional shopping malls would be struggling and that so many major department stores would go out of business. Oh my word! I remember Railroad Salvage! And to whoever mentioned Child World, again I am glad it is not a figment of my imagination. I remember going there once as a very small child, then it was gone and as if no one had ever heard about it.

Has anyone mentioned Zayres or Ames?

Bradless and Caldor were regional chains in a very different era. Walmart and Target are national juggernauts that are run more wisely and with far better marketing and branding. They are gone because they could not compete with such behemoths.

Kohl's also came in to fill a void with Bradlees and Caldor's older, female demographic.

Unless consumer behavior changes drastically, they will still be around in a decade.

Remember the cookie store in the mall (Westfarms for sure, I know) - The Original Cookie. Didn't they merge or get bought out by Mrs. Fields? I thought I heard that.

Also in Westfarms MAll, MANY moons ago was a clothing store called Arthur's, and one called Jean Nicole.
