Waterbury is a post industrial city, that has struggled in the last few decades.
Ir is still known as the 'Brass City' for its manufacturing of various items from clocks, to tools etc.
The city has been plagued with elected officials who have been corrupt- and spent time in prison.
This is a broad view- and others can give more specific information. The cities reputation is perhaps the worse in Connecticut
The crime rate is above the national average. The schools are not the best of what Connecticut has to offer.
I suggest you look outside of the city to live. Middlebury, Thomaston, Wolcott, Watertown would be far better.

Like most large cities, the schools in Waterbury have issues particularly in the upper grades. Many people send their kids to private schools to avoid these problems. You might want to consider this too or moving to one of the adjacent towns skytrakker has recommended. Jay

Waterbury Sucks!
I have relocated here 8 years ago from Va - Beach. Just got out of the Navy with My husband. After moving here his job laid him off 6 months later. The area is depressing, awful, it's the armpit of CT. I hate to be negative but I wish someone told me to move to watertown, middlebury or somewhere. We are going to be leaving soon. After we bought our house (we didn't know about the major and how broke this city was) our home taxes shot up from 4 grand a year to 8 grand a year and my house is small!!!!
Schools are awful although alot of the teachers look like they want to be here, alot of the parents look uninterested. I can go on and on.
One benefit I can say is we have excellent medical dr's and specialists here.

My father worked at the Palace Theatre in Waterbury for a period of time. He's told me that it is the worst place in Connecticut. As a comparison, my family hails from Hartford, the crime and poverty capital of New England. For my father to say that Waterbury is the worst really means something.

For a city its size, it has significantly more real estate inventory (properties currently on the market) than its rivals.
As a REALTOR®, I'm not supposed to talk about schools. Suffice it to say, Waterbury's public schools are in the zero percentile along with Hartford's.

umm I know this post was put up here 3 months ago, but I feel like I had to say something. The people who post up CMT scores about waterbury, hartford, bridgeport don't understand something; those scores have nothing to do with how well a student can perform. Let me explain...
I grew up in waterbury and I go to one of the best public universities in the country. I attended the waterbury public schools for 12 years. I'll be the first to admit; waterbury schools are nowhere near the top for CMT or CAPT scores. This is a reflection of how much a student practices at home. TRUST ME; if you guide the child right and have the child practicing math every night from third grade on, its very likely that the child will be in AP Calculus by their senior year.
That is something that we don't have alot of in Waterbury. It is very diverse; there are low income parts and there are high income parts. The low income parts are represented more when it comes to CMT's and CAPT tests. Just like when ur in a class and the class does a project on something. 25 out of 40 students receive 90% but the rest receive very low grades. That brings down the average as compared to some of the other classes. This case is similar to what goes on in Waterbury.
This post is an alternative to posts where people pull the realtor's finger and that fart out CMT scores. They have little bearing on whats really going on.
