It must be a southern thing.

It's a nice city, they did a lot with the downtown that put Hartford to shame. However, the city is not without problems. The Meck schools for the most part are a mess and overcrowded. Meck taxes have also shot up considerably and the state income tax is now higher than ours.

That's just factual. I'm not going to sit here and be a blind cheerleader for any place because there is no place that deserves that. Just be objective and you'll not get a surprise if you decide to move.

I know that; thank you. I am not going to Meck but Union County south of Charlotte. I am getting a 4500sq ft home and paying 4,100 in tax with HOA fee of 550. The HOA is half the price of my car tax at 1,110 and my property tax at 10,8000 here. Gas is .25/gal cheaper and elect is 35% less.

Actually, Union county is more Southeast/East but anyway. Let me guess...hmmm, Waxhaw, Marvin, Weddington.

If your life revolves around how big of a McMansion you have and who can get the most stuff for the cheapest then that's all appealing.

Charlotte is a fine city. No doubt. If you think I am arguing otherwise you are wrong.

However, life IS about compromises. Moving to Charlotte you give up any kind of real access to the Ocean (3+ hours is NOT close. Sorry), anything resembling a mountain in about 2 hours, you gain roughly 13% unemployment, your "baller" subdivision will be surrounded by mostly poor rural living, just about everything is in a strip mall, traffic is a nightmare, very hot Summers, not much of fall, a sincere lack of history and access to two world class cities in your backyard etc.

Again, it's all about balance and compromise. I run these same give and take scenarios through my head all the time. I'm NOT happy with CT on many fronts believe me.

Good luck in whatever you do.

Nor am I. But when making a list of pros and cons, the list of pros outweighs the cons.

It's about even for me taking everything into consideration. So do I move away from family, walk away from two fairly stable jobs to break even?

The other thing about Charlotte that is a major red flag to me is that it's a one trick pony. If there is ever a financial collapse in the USA (Very likely at this rate.) Charlotte will become the new Detroit.

Yep, exactly. That's why I'm not a fan of living in one area with miles and miles of NOTHING around it.

And that it is...Well you do have the Triad to the North which is fueled by the tobacco and (Chinese decimated) furniture industry to fall back on.

And you will also be paying taxes on your groceries in NC which we do not do here YET.

What town do you live in that you are paying such high taxes on your car? either you have very expensive vehicles or you are living in a town with a very high mill rate. Jay
