Library? Honestly? The best libraries I've been to are in Orlando and Charlotte. I'm not making it up. But even still, that is such a small part of life. You could get rid of the library and frankly it wouldn't impact my life much if at all.

DEP? Well, we certainly disagree there. The government doing big land grabs is frightening to me, and contrary to our foundation as a nation. Do yourself a favor Jay, go spend some time on state owned property and see how much freedom you have on it. State owned property is insanely controlled and regulated. You have less rights as a human than some of the creatures living in it.

Our state park system on the otherhand I agree with and think it's excellent.
So we should give up on providing quality health care to people to save money?

And yes libraries. Just about every town in Connecticut has a good library, many times multiple branches. It is one of the reasons why we have such highly educated people. Your kids are young right now but as they get older you will appreciate this little thing.

As for State owned land, you would rather have this property in the hands of private developers who will subdivide the heck out it and build subdivision after subdivision like you see down south. Not me. Jay

CT Budget Passes, With Big Transportation Decisions Still To Come | Mobilizing the Region

WTH , your going to cut lines you just poured hundreds of millions into and are growing ridership. Not to mention have projects tied into them that can bring 10000s of jobs over the next few decades? And i thought NJ had issues with Rail.....? The Busway and Route 11 projects should be scrapped if the state is going to lose Rail service on other lines....

Huh? No Jay, but passing a law that says a hospital doesn't have the right to turn away someone uninsured from care in the emergency room turns the emergency room into a free clinic. Seriously, get with the program. You should go to CCMC or Manchester General or any other hospital to see what really goes through the emergency rooms. When I broke my ankle last year, it was great to sit among a majority of people there for general care for hours. Same for when my children have to go to CCMC for an honest emergency and not a sinus infection.

All that "free" healthcare is why your and my health insurance policy in CT is 20-30% higher than many other states.

You really think the education status of our residents is because of a library? LOL Listen, my kids already have library cards. I find it's an outdated model. We provide better materials on our own. It's a new era where you can access the library of congress with a few key strokes, or just about anything else you like. I'm not saying get rid of them...but the question you were asked was about quality of life. A library contributes about .0001% to that IMO.

Yes Jay, all these developers are just dying to clear cut our forests and build homes on .1 acre lots. LOL Please. You know as well as I do that city zoning restrictions pretty much keep that in check.

Why does government need a forest? Seriously. Can someone answer me why the government needs a forest?

Jay, you might want to check into how New Hampshire handles open land and even private land use. It for the most part gets government out of the way.

Current Use of Land in New Hampshire

But it's just the trend our nation is heading in. The Feds already own about 90% of the West. That's pretty frightening.

While you might have an obsession for choo choo trains, the rest of us who actually live here are worried about the entire state.

It's good that New England saves so much money on street signs. Guess that's why our taxes are lower than the taxes in places that put up full signs.

So they should spend more taxpayer dollars on street signs? That's not being very fiscally conservative.

No marbles left so we have to resort to b*tching about street signs? Really?

While this is designated a state route, it does not mean the road has to meet full modern highway standards. If you want that take I-95, Route 1 or the Merritt Parkway.
When one has to choose between the Merritt (tailgating maniacs) and 106 (slow....) it does not make for a happy commute life.

How are school expenditures poorly coorelated to outcomes?
Just google it. Some of the worst schools in the US have the highest expenditures, and vice versa.

As for the environment, you are aproponent of sprawl and uncontrolled growth as well as utilizing what little ecological resources we have from the past 300 years of growth for more jobs and more homes for more people? If you want that type of an area move to Texas or North Carolina. Heck, even New Jersey.
Nice straw man you constructed there! My point was only this: given the costs and regulatory structure of Connecticut, there is not likely to be any economic boom to carry this state out of its problems.

You are right our taxes need to be trimmed to encourage job growth but at what sacafice do we make it for? That is the real question.
Yup. And yesterday's announcement shows the state administration is trying not to make those choices.
