Anyone in Canton??
How is the drive into Hartford? We are planning a trip to Ct to check out neighborhoods for possible relocation. I'm looking for 2,000sq ft with some land- between 250K-350K.
I have fallen in love with some of the homes located in Canton, however my husband is concerned with the drive into the city, ecpecially in the snow. It does not snow where we are at. Any suggestions?

The commute from Canton into Hartford is usually on U.S 44- over Avon Mountain. This a rather steep mountain- 4 lanes-
I have looked at MSFT Streets to see alternative routes. One could be either route 4 or 10 through Farmington to I 84- which would make the trip over 'The Mountain' not needed- there would be more millage, but less lights and traffic.
Snow varies here from year to year- last year we had a mere 20"- and the roads here are quickly cleared of snow- including US 44 over Avon Mountain. Extreme weather conditions occur here a few times a winter.
If you liked Canton, consider Tolland county (east of the CT river) commute is on I 84- quiet country living and lower housing prices.

The trip from Canton into Hartford would take about 45 minutes during rush hour (30 minutes without traffic). As Skytrekker indicated, your husband would have to travel over Avon Mountain which has had a history of accidents. In the winter, it could be raining at the bottom of the mountain and snowing at the top (or worse it could be freezing ice). The State is very aggressive about maintaining this road though.
Canton (as with all of the Farmington River Valley towns) is a beautiful community with very good schools and a lot to do. Another similar town would be Granby which is to the north (and you don't have to go over the mountain to get to).
I agree with Skytrekker that you should consider towns east of the Connecticut River as well. Towns similar to Canton include Tolland, Hebron, Bolton and Marlborough. Hope this helps and good luck. Jay

I used to live in Simsbury (moved last May), and I can tell you that the drive into Hartford can be a killer. Don't even consider taking 10 south to 84. The traffic through Farmington onto Rte 4 to get to 84 is a nightmare!
An alternative is to go over the mountain into Bloomfield. But so much depends on where in Hartford your husband needs to get to.

Great Info -thanks igione
consider east of the CT river- while I 84 is no picnic- for a southern Californian it will be a piece of cake.

Anyone in Canton?
There is a commuter bus line from Canton into Hartford. There are several commuter parking lots along the line. You can obtain more details ( maps, schedule, fares) on the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation web site
