There are many fantastic towns in southwestern CT near NYC-
the problem is they are very expensive. But if coming from southern California- they may be in some cases cheaper for you. Stamford is a great city less then an hour out of NYC- with prices for homes and apartments that are actually less then L.A. Of course there are many other traditional New England towns with the green you desire. Ask all the questions you like-hopefully we can help-
thanks for choosing Connecticut.

I suggest taking a preliminary look at Stamford and South Norwalk (South Norwalk is part of the City of Norwalk). Both cities are along the coast, offer convenient access to New York (via commuter rail), and sport their own nightlife, dining, and entertainment options.
I don't know your housing budget, but Fairfield County is pricey -- not quite as high as southern California but pricey nonetheless.
Good Luck!

There are many nice places in Ct within a short trip to New York. The southwestern part of the state (Fairfield County) is considered a suburb of the city. This area has some of New Yorks most desirable (and expensive) suburbs. Being from southern California, I doubt you will be shocked by the prices though.
Stamford is the major city in that portion of the state. It is surrounded by beautiful towns like Greenwich, Darien and New Canaan. There is also Westport, Wilton, Weston, Ridgefield and Fairfield. All of these are considered within commuting distance of Manhatten.
Recently Connecticut has been discovered by the movie industry. The state recently lowered taxes on film production and that has brought a number of major movies into the state for filming. There are at least four that I know of right now. If you give us some information of what you are looking for, we could help find you a town you would like. Jay

You should try the New Haven, CT area. It is a great place to live. It is close to everything you could possible want. You can rent a great apartment (everything brand new!) at Wintergreen of Westville Apartment Homes. Just go on the website and check out the floor plans. The anemities are awesome! It is in the arts district of New Haven in the village of Westville (a part of New Haven). You will be close to the train station and everything else you might need. You can go on their website (Wintergreenofwestville.com). It is just minutes to the train station, where you can hop a train to New York City in no time.

Because you say that you are a tv/film major it sounds like you are not long out of college and perhaps in your 20s. if that is the case I would head towards Stamford, South Norwalk and New Haven where there tends to be more activity. If you are seeking the quieter life head to the suburbs though finding something under $400k less than an hour from New York can be tough. Have you considered renting until you know the area better?
