Young Professionals in Waterbury??
Hey Everyone,
My fiance and I are looking to find a young hip area to live in Waterbury. We have drove around several times and cant seem to find much. Would like to find a place where we could walk to restaurants, bars, theatres. There are a couple bars around West Main near the Green but I would like to hear if there are decent apartments in the area.
Thanks for any Info.
Matt

I think you are correct in your first impressions about Waterbury-
why the interest? I am not here to knock the city- it has value to some.
Young Professionals? Travel to New Haven or Stamford.

As far as I can see, young professionals flee Waterbury at 5 pm to head back to the 'burbs where they live. Sky is right on, Stamford or New Haven has more what you are looking for, as does West Hartford (specifically, West Hartford center).

Hartford is also becoming an area for young professionals as well. Bridgeport is too. Waterbury has not gotten to that point yet. Jay

Thanks for the replys everyone. I was in hartford today planning my our wedding, and its such a contrast between dtown Hartford and Waterbury. Waterbury doesn't seem to any younger influence on the city. It seems rundown and trashy.
I was even in Bridgeport for the first time the otherweeked. From what i always heard that was a dump too. We went out on Fairfield ave and it seem to have a bunch of bars and clubs that were fun.
We are staying close to the watertown area for our jobs, just dont want to get caught up in the burb life so early in our lives. That day will come down the road.

If your jobs are in Watertown, you might consider Danbury. You would be doing a "reverse" commute during rush hour, so it would probably only be about a 30 minute drive, depending on how close your job is to the highway (I-84).
I don't know Danbury very well, so maybe others here can give you some specifics on neighborhoods if you are interested.

There are some nice bars/restaurants in the Black Rock section of Bridgeport. The Acoustic Cafe has some good live music. There is a new place opening on Fairfield Ave close to downtown called Two Boots which I think will be a draw for good live music. Captains Cove is nice during the summer. Bport gets some of the top reggae artists from Jamaica on a regular basis mostly at Club Aces and Legends Social Club on the East Side of the city.
I wouldn't dismiss Waterbury as quickly as some of the other posters. Downtown Waterbury has the Brass horse tavern, Palace Theater(Fabolous the rapper from Brooklyn is playing there this weekend), John Bale Bookstore(they put on lectures and some music events), and the Mattatuck museum. There are many good restaurants as well.

I would think twice about Waterbury. The city doesn't have much of a nightlife and is -as you put it and IMO- trashy. Other posters are right...Waterbury is a place where suburbanites go during the day (work, school, shopping) then hop on 84 or Route 8 and head home.
I would highly recommend checking out New Haven or West Hartford. Both are within 45 minutes of Watertown and very nice, vibrant areas. West Hartford will be more expensive than New Haven, and parts of New Haven can be seedy so if you decide to look there, just be careful.
