There is less public transportation as you get out of downtown and up near North Haven. You might be best off living near your work, as North Haven is a very safe town. You might be able to find a bus route that connects to your work. Hamden's a good option too. But again, these are suburbs with a bit less public transportation and less walkable than New Haven proper.

Coviden is on Middletown Avenue near the New Haven line. the only bus service in this area is Connecticut Transit's C line which has just one bus that stops at Coviden. It leaves downtown at 6:15 and gets you to their campus at 6:30 AM. There is a bus back downtown at 3:15 PM. The C line does operate a lot more often along Quinnipiac Avenue which is a couple of blocks over. Check the schedule and routes offered here.

You should really find out just where you will be working. Coviden also leases a large space at the Maritime Center on Long Wharf in New Haven.

Someone should be able to tell at what physical address you will be working.
That's going to make a difference in where you might like to look for an apartment.

There is no "safe" area that ALSO is easy access to work from home, using public transportation, in New Haven. Your best bet is to live in North Haven, and in fact there are a couple of apartment buildings within bicycle riding distance, that are also within a couple blocks of the bus stop. It's a 15 minute bus ride to Covidien, though I don't believe the bus stops AT that location, you'd still need to walk a block, I -think-.

Check for apartments on Middletown Avenue in *North* Haven, not *New* Haven. It's the same street but the neighborhood changes drastically once you cross the town line.

Edited to add: Covidien is north of the "Foxon" area of New/North Haven/Northford/North Branford, 1 block south of the crossroads of Middletown and Quinnipiac Ave.

There are plenty of decent apartments in the area, however none are on the bus line that goes TO Covidien. You'd need to take a bus all the way downtown, then transfer to go right back to where you just came from, just so you could be 20 blocks from your own house, which is definitely not walking distance in the winter, or when it rains, or during the hottest days of summer.

That's why I suggest the North Haven side of Middletown Avenue. It's close, it's convenient to the supermarkets, it has apartments, and it's right on the bus line that actually goes in the direction you need it to go.

How about Branford? Not sure about buses to your work, but it's another great town to consider.

Fair warning, living in any suburb could get frustrating without a car.

As someone above mentioned, in the past year, Covidiean has moved 450 jobs ( I believe their entire North Haven corporate office ) into the Maritime Center building at Long Wharf, New Haven.

I second East Rock (or downtown if the price is right).
The Z bus gets you right there and you could take the A bus from Orange Street in East Rock to downtown and transfer to the Z. During the week, door-to-door on the bus might be 20-30 mins if you time the buses right.
Westville is good, too, but you'd probably be around more young people in East Rock or downtown.

You could also bike it or drive to their garage in much less time for sure.
