I do not have a car and will be relying on public transportation. My job is at Covidien in New Haven. What areas, neighborhoods, apartment complexes, etc. and safe for recent college grad, female. I don't mind small, I just want safe, clean, and near public transportation. Never having lived on the east coast I don't have any idea of how much apartments rent for or what is typically included. I have already searched the forums here, but thought I should post where I will be working so I can get some recommendations with that in mind.

Thanks

Budget? Safe usually means more expensive in NH.

UPDATE to request for advice and recommendations.

As far as budget, would like to keep around $1000, hopefully less. Oh and I am looking in Connecticut, the New Haven area. I have been told to look specifically at East Rock.

East Rock or downtown are best. Westville too is not bad. Keep in mind though that these are urban areas. If you want a more suburban area, consider towns like Milford or Hamden. Jay

Downtown is tough at $1000. I agree on East Rock. Probably your best bet.

One thing to note about East Rock - there are very few traditional apartment complexes. If you're looking for something other than a place in a three-story house, you may want to look a little further north in Hamden along Whitney Ave., although I'm not what the budget would be for those apartments.

$1000 should get you a studio or one-bedroom in East Rock but you will have to look pretty hard as prices continue to rise year to year. Utilities are unlikely to be included. There are plenty of other recent college grads and students in the neighborhood, including women who live alone.

I do not consider the neighborhood to be unsafe, but if you are the type of person who gets upset or nervous over the occasional mention of a car break-in or mugging in the neighborhood, you might want to look at Hamden or other towns.

I am a female who used to live alone in Westville and I would have no problem doing so again. Stay away from Goeffe Street area (near SCSU, it gets worse the further you get from the college) and Valley Street (kind of behind Rt. 15/exit 59) and its immediate side streets. I lived near Edgewood Park at the far reaches of Elm Street and felt perfectly safe and had a lot of good neighbors.

Yes the physical address is North Haven, but they say New Haven. In Google Maps, it looks to be centered between New Haven and North Haven. Still I am looking for reviews and recommendations of where to live that is safe, clean, and I can use public transportation.
