Being a Marlborough resident, I have to be honest with you. The changes coming are a planned industrial park and a developed town center, and the town center is already somewhat developed so it isn't a stretch. They are putting in sidewalks in the town center and sewers, not exactly what I would call "yuppifying" the place. I am fairly certain that the yuppie types are still hitting up Glastonbury (because really, who else loves Toll Brothers work?) and the people who want some sort of "amenities" in this area are going to Colchester. Being that the town is fairly well developed with residential lots and the town has a good grip on its planning and zoning, you aren't going to have big boxes and ugly suburban developments moving in. Marlborough and Hebron still look like pretty safe bets (for now!).

Typical......
Typical........ Obama-esque 'thought' process...... "I moved here because Marlborough is a beautiful, quaint little town. I love it here, now let's see how I can change it...." === We'll see how "well located" it is when you/ commuters to Hartford and other 20+ mile away cities are having to use your kid's summer camp money(or FOOD, Heating Oil, Insurance $ for that matter) to pay for gasoline(if you can get it......)...........especially when it's a bit POMPOUS to live so far from your workplace, on the ASSUMPTION that you'll have: A. a working vehicle B. the bottomless wallet C. someone to carpool with ("Oh, I could NEVER do that..."), D. etc...... That is UNLESS ( and I SERIOUSLY DOUBT IT): YOU, are WILLING to ride a bicycle to work, and home, EVERYDAY,and all the 'Fun' that entails... rain or shine, 100 degrees or 5 degrees, Semis whizzing past your elbow, beer bottle chuckers (hey YOU'RE the one that moved TO Marlborough , I already ACCEPT that THEY were here FIRST, although I KILL them if I catch 'em...) - as I HAVE, WILLINGLY, and HAVING fun doing it... ====== and regarding CHANGE.... Change can be good, and it can be bad. I Like the good, and DISPISE the bad. SIDEWALKS = B-A-D!! (and with the FROST HEAVES we get, it won't take long before they WILL be busted up, askew, and a REAL eyesore, AND SAFETY HAZARD. THINK people, T-H-I-N-K

Alex - Your comments and concerns are interesting since you say you do not even live in Marlborough anymore. The people that want change do live in Marlborough. They paid for their homes and pay taxes and if there are going to be changes (and there will be changes whether you like it or not), it is their decision as residents of the town. Sorry but this is the real world and whether you like it or not, things do change. Jay

Alex,
Don't take this wrong, but you sound like a bit of a nut... Change is good.

Yeah, I'M nuts. Nuts to think such a wonderful, quiet little town should be able to stay that way.... I didn't mention that MY GRANDMOTHER WAS BORN ON BULL HILL in 1903, I have WALKED EVERY SINGLE MILE OF EVERY SINGLE ROAD in the Town of Marlborough (unless it was put in after 2001), I have fished, swum, and drunk the water of every stream, you could blindfold me, and drop me off in the middle of the night, and I would be on your doorstep by sun up. I worked on my knees in farmers fields e , raised Goats, Pigs, Chickens, Ducks, and Geese, rode horse English, Western ,and BAREBACK through the woods. I worked at Renison Pheasant Farm on the Hairpin Turn at Salmon River, I Worked at Sadler's Ordinary when Jay Shea re-opened it about 1980, I worked at The Marlborough Tavern BEFORE some genius decide to alter a now 268 year old HISTORICAL BUILDING (that George Washington purportedly slept at and WAS A STOP ON THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD- I Have SEEN the tunnel) and pumped gas at the Don's A-1, next to where I used to buy 1 cent Bazooka Bubble Gum after walking 3 miles to the Center (and then home) at what WILL ALWAYS be called OFSHAY'S. I screamed at the TV rooting for Gretchen Villion when she was on the ice enroute to WINNING THE GOLD MEDAL with the 1998 Women's Hockey Team. The late Mayor Howard Dean was MY FIRST LITTLE LEAGUE COACH. Do the names BLISH, LORD, STANDISH mean ANYTHING TO YOU?? My bones are OF the minerals found in The Soil and Rocks of Marlborough, and someday will be reabsorbed into that SAME HALLOWED GROUND.......SO PARDON ME if I'm "NUTS".....I will live there again, and probably LONG AFTER YOU LEAVE. Now... WHO are YOU!

Alex - Sorry, but just because your family has lived in Marlborough for years does not mean that you have any rights to stop changes in the town. The residents of town are the ones that decide its future and in our society usually majority rules. You seem to be in the minority. Yes, Marlborough is a beautiful town but it is growing and changing whether you like it or not. Property in the town has become too valuable to leave vacant and everyone has the right to develop their land to its fullest extent allowed under current zoning. Jay

Good lord Alex, methinks I've touched a nerve... Look, Marlborough is a very nice town, however, it'll change with or without your permission. I was born and raised in South Glastonbury and I've seen the change brought to that town, and believe me it sucks! That's why I moved after college and started in Lebanon, which is kind of like Glastonbury in the 60's and 70's... Just more rural. Don't worry about whats happening to Marlborough, you'll keep your blood pressure down and live longer!
