Weathersfield, New Britain, Kensington, Rocky Hill, Portland? How are the towns on the SW and W side of Hartford?
For your budget, I would look at Wethersfield (Note spelling. ) and Rocky Hill. Traffic coming from the West will more than make up being closer.

East of the River you have virtually no traffic, from the South not too bad.

Berlin : Strictly nowheresville. Used to have a small-town feel. Not anymore.

New Britain: A small, densely populated city of 70,000 with some really depressed, crime-ridden areas.

Wethersfield & Rocky Hill: Nice towns, but very suburban.

Depending on how long you're willing to commute, you may want to consider Granby or Simsbury. Geographically they're not far from Hartford, but there's no interstate highway to get you to or from either of these places. Technically these, too, are suburbs of Hartford but they're WAY more subdued and rural in comparison. You can probably get a modest house for your range here. These are north of the city. West of the city, the only place that comes to mind that's small-town and not too far away would be Canton. South of the city that's rural? Maybe Durham.

$250K opens up a whole new world! You could definitely do a 3BR/2 car garage raised ranch for under that price in Marlborough or Hebron. Colchester is further out but will also have some options in that range.

Default 150K to 180K?

You are from another state. Perhaps you have not heard of our governor, Benjamin Dover. You will get the full Connecticut experience of electricity rates, gas prices, car and house taxes, and overpriced-run down homes. I have lived here my whole life and I will be retired in about 15 years, most likely out of state. It is just too dam expensive to live here. Connecticut has always been a wanna be New York, especially the Fairfield county area, but most of Connecticut has seen its maufacturing dwindle to nothing - too much overhead. Ask a businessman if they want to be in Connecticut. I wish you the best of luck.

What does that even mean?

You mean the droves of investors, hedge fund managers, professionals, business owners, developers, etc. etc. that are continually doing business in this state successfully? OK. I'll ask them.

Believe me, most of Connecticut does not want to be New York or anything like it. Jay

Default South Windsor #38 in Money magazine

South Windsor is right next to East Hartford and a very nice town to live in. I love it here. We are close to highways and shopping, but, suburban with a rural touch. South Windsor has an excellent school system, keeping property values high.

Hey folks, an update! (And thank you for the offer to help kara, but we may well make an offer before the week is out)

We're looking at a couple homes in Willington and Ellington. I've already gotten a lot of good input on Ellington, what's the word on Willington? Nevermind the distance, I'm aware that it's a bit further out than most of my initial selections.

Anything good / bad / indifferent?

My guess is replies will lean toward 'indifferent' - I've never heard anyone have much to say about either one, good or bad.
