JayCT- The house I saw was on Overlook Ave. It sits right on the corner of Overlook Ave. and Black Rock Turnpike. The owners had this high fence surrounding the entire property. We had to peep through the fence just to see the house. That was my clue that it must be to keep the traffic noise out (or perhaps those folks like to seclusion).

Yeap, that section of Black Rock Turnpike is very very busy and Overlook is used as a cut-through from the residental neighborhoods to the north to I-95. That is a very busy corner. Try to find a home on a side street. There should be something you like. Good luck, Jay

I figured so...hence the fortress like fence. Thanks for the advice and I'll definitely cross that one off my list. There were three others we liked that were off on side streets, so hopefully we'll luck out.
Thanks again!

cyan29 - Let me know if you want my opinion of the location of the other homes you are considering. I know the area very well and could give you an idea of any problems or things to look for. I am happy to help. Jay

Stratfield road area is a nice area of modest by Fairfield Standards homes. It nice to live there if you want to bike to the store or walk with the kids..sschools are good..homes well kept...and the park OWEN FISH is nearby....so is the merrit parkway for commuting.
Mellville ave is one of the more congested areas of Fairfield--good for those that want easy access to big stores and other similar features.
Neither of these areas are good for those that are not used to any sort of noise...as this area is not in the country.
Streets off of the post rd...ocean side (south) or North side of 95 are better places to find really quite neighborhoods. Areas near to but not immediately adjacent to Fairfield University are extremely so....greenfield hills if you've got the pockets for it--perfect. Winding roads..extremely rural and QUIET !

I do not know that I agree that the neighborhoods south of the Post Road are quieter than Stratfield. There is a lot of traffic going through the Center to get to the beaches in that area and the Post Road is a lot busier than Stratfield Road. Even the Fairfield University area has North Benson Road which is pretty busy and noisy. Mill Plain which is north of I-95 is busy because of Mill Plain Road. Stratfield can be just as quiet as these areas, though I agree Meville Avenue is busy. Greenfield Hill is a world of its own with stunning homes on large lots (2 acre minimum) and charming winding country roads. Very, very nice if you can afford it. Jay

I don't think I stated that Stratfield was noisy !.as I would not consider it to be...but as you know a few good size homes..many small capes and ranches or expanded homes.....perhaps even starter homes by Fairfield Standards. Great if you don't need big space...and I do not mean 6,000 square foot monster homes....I mean these homes floor space is my quess 1400 to 1600 square foot..with perhaps a finished basement or garage.

Sorry wan2hav - I must have misread your post. You are correct that Stratfield has many modest sized homes, but that is because they were built in an era when home sizes were more modest than today. There is a wide range of housing in Stratfield from the very nice but modest sized homes you describe to beautiful larger colonials or ranches.
Toilsome Hill Road, Inwood Road, Northwood and Eastwood Roads have large beautiful homes. Brooklawn Parkway has more modest but charming homes set along a landscaped boulevard with a babbling brook down the center. And then there is Skytop. A really nice area of striking modern homes built in the late 50's and early 60's. It was and still is one of the most "in" streets in town. Jay
