Alright, back to the OP's question. I was born there and lived there for 35 years. It is an excellent town, the schools are very good and super access to highways and Hartford/New Haven. I know that town like the back of my hand; the OP will find what she's looking for and more. You can still live in a "normal" house with run of the mill neighbors. There are a fairly significant number of wanna-be rich people there, as well as genuinely rich people. My wife deals with these clowns every day; "do you know who I am?" "do you know what kind of job I have?" "I need to see the Dr right now!!" It's laughable, but probably happens elsewhere too. Bottom line, it's a good town, super crowded in the center, but with many amenities. However, it's not the place where I grew up....

MTnLaura - your assessment is pretty accurate - if you look back - no one said for you not to live there and no one said that the whole town is snobby. You're just getting everyone's different opinions and experiences. There are pockets of snobs in any upscale town. I can see why you are confused, unfortunately only you can decide whats right for you and your family.
If you have any questions about my experiences feel free to send me a direct message. I am bowing out of this thread, Good luck

Glastonbury is a nice town with good schools and has some nice amenities in the center of town (main st, hebron ave). As with any upper middle class town, you will find societal experiences of accordance. I don't think that should really be a factor when you are considering a town, its really an unavoidable circumstance. Good luck on your house hunt.

Which suits me just fine! Right? I wish you all knew ME and could tell me if I'd do okay there! ha ha. Actually, I wish you all knew me so I'd at least know SOMEONE in Connecticut before I move all the way up there!

MtnLaura, sorry that this discussion has gotten so long. I can't believe it went for 5 pages in such a short time.
Don't be confused. I think the point is that there are some snobby people in Glastonbury because it is an affluent town and you should expect to run into them if you move here. But they are not the majority. There are many nice down to earth people here. Hopefuly those are the types of people you will meet and become firends with. Good luck, Jay

See now I disagree with you. I hate to generalize but I have found that South Glastonbury is where most of the snobs in town live. It is the most affluent part of town and many of the large new homes that these type of people are drawn to are in South Glastonbury.
Now before Tetto and CTwhitechin jump on me for saying this (I think they live in South Glastonbury), I will say I know a number of REALLY nice down to earth people there too. Jay

I'm not going to jump on you...I happen to agree with you. It's a great place, but you're right the people invaded and built their ostentatious houses (Crystal Ridge...) and compromised the feel. But its still nice and my parents live there. I however, live next door to the filth and squalor of Willimantic....

I know one of the families in those Crystal Ridge houses and they are nice. Jay

nope Jay I agree with you too Down around the Great Pond area seems to be more snobby to me. I live up off of Hebron Ave, fairly close to Addison Package store.

My buddy's GF lives in a really nice condo in WH right off FarmingtonA ve and they've told her she lives in "the ghetto." I'm not making this up. Now, I'm no psychiatrist, but I do own a couch, and IMO these people are just suffering from a major case of Farmington Valley elitism and they need to deflate their big heads and float down to earth with the rest of us. The more I hear ridiculous comments like this, the more I appreciate where I live and grateful I am that idiots like these don't live here. For all its pastoral charm, low crime and high quality of life, FV is not what I consider a racially sensitive place. They should get over themselves and admit they're no better or worse. There are still people there who really say they're immune to things like crime and teen drug use because they're further away from the city. But IMO, if you really believe that ,you should either be packed off to Bellevue or asked to co-host The View.

Ironically, what those 2 friends/co-workers who live in Glastonbury that I mentioned in a previous post in this thread DID say is, "if you want snobbery/feel uncomfortable where it really happens in this area is in Avon and Simsbury".
