hi, my daughter is 23 and taking her first job in hartford, ct. She has only two weeks to find an apt. She went to school on the east coast, but we know nothing about Hartford. We need a safe, young neighborhood, where she can walk to groceries, ride a bike, and still get to work at the hospital. Any suggestions on areas to look at?

There are many areas to look. Downtown and the West End of Hartford are good places to look for a more urban feel. West Hartford has a great downtown and is popular with young professionals. If she wants suburban locations, Newington and Wethersfield immediately south of Hartford are good. To the east, Manchester and Vernon are fine as is upscale Glastonbury. As the others have noted, we will need more information like where she will be working, budget, type of area she would like (urban, suburban, rural) and if she will have a car. Jay

I vote for Glastonbury for her for safety we have been here since 2004 but she won't have a car? It's about 7 miles from my house to the two major hospitals...car is pretty much a necessity for us.

Default thanks for responding

Hartford Hospital; she will have a car to get to work but she has been living in Boston for 4 years without a car, and she loves to be able to walk to coffee shops, etc...on days off

She will probably need a 2 bedroom, and look for a roommate

Is she working at Hartford Hospital?? I ask because--and you may already well know--the area surrounding Hartford Hospital is quite crime-ridden, somewhat blighted and not very safe in general.

But hopefully she won't be there. At any rate if she does work there, she should obviously live elsewhere and commute in. My vote goes to West Hartford for the best neighborhood in Hartford. But it would be a commute for that particular hospital. Downtown Hartford is not so bad, but somewhat "quiet and sleepy" compared to many cities--with sidewalk traffic dying after 6pm.

I work near the Hartford Hospital area. If your daughter has been living in Boston, I'm sure she can handle the neighborhood during working hours. However, I would not recommend it as a safe place to live and I would think very carefully about biking to work-a car commute is probably a better idea.

I would second the previous suggestions of downtown Hartford, the west end of Hartford, and West Hartford. Downtown and the west end are more urban and (in my opinion) livelier, but West Hartford is safer and likely the only option which would let her walk easily to a full service grocery store. It sounds as if she is looking for a particular lifestyle so she will probably have to check these places out in person.
