Coventry info, especially about schools
We have found a house in Coventry, CT that we like very much, but we need some more info about the area. I am looking for specific comments about Coventry, positive or negative. I especially need more info about the public schools. We have three kids, aged 6, 4, and 2. The six year old is beginning first grade.
We have just relocated from Atlanta, GA for my husband to begin a job in East Hartford. Our house searching to this point has been focused on Tolland and Ellington. I like those areas a lot, but don't know a thing about Coventry.
Thanks!

Welcome to eastern Connecticut!
Coventry is a pleasant town,
Incorporated in 1712, Coventry is "the gateway to Northeastern Connecticut's Quiet Corner". Spread over a 37 square mile area, it is a semi-rural town of 12,000, offering historic sites, antique shops, two public beaches and a boat launch on Coventry's lake, as well as pleasant places to eat and relax. Nathan Hale, Connecticut's State Hero, American Patriot, is a Coventry native.

Coventry Public Schools
Of the three towns you have considered, Tolland and Coventry will be the most rural- Ellington is developing into a 'standard suburb'.

Coventry schools have some mixed results for the Connecticut Mastery Tes results. The 8th grade resulta show student at or near the State average for reading and writing, but under for the math. Also the class sizes are a bit high for some grades. While not bad, this is not great either. You might wnat to check other towns if schools are a real high priority. Jay

Why do you suppose that is?
I don't have children so the schools aren't an issue for me in that regard but they are an issue for resale. Are there private schools in Coventry? Catholic or otherwise?

Coventry is a nice town, somewhat rural. I don't think there are private schools in Coventry proper, but there are in nearby towns.
Ellington is becoming Generic Bland Suburb in Anywhere, USA. Tolland is quite nice. If you like the feel of Tolland and Coventry, you could also look at the towns of Hebron, Marlborough, and Bolton. All are easy commutes to East Hartford.

The major route between Coventry and East Hartford is very slow going during the commuting hours. Coventry seems to have a large population of pychics? No idea why this is. Hebron is a lovely town. Glastonbury is beautiful but has gotten expensive. What about Lebanon, Ansonia, Marlborough, Columbia? There is one little town on the way to the Girl Scout camp that looks like at any time there could be a little parade with kids waving American flags and you could walk down the street and a neighbor would invite you in for Apple Pie.

If you are commuting from coventry to east hartford you can take interstate 384 and avoid the back up on 84 in the morning. 384 dumps you right in manchester via exit 1. A left at the end of the exit and you are only 1/4 mile from the EH border. I wouldn't let the commute from Coventry to EH sway your decision. It is quite an easy commute.

bfly71 - Ansonia is not in this area. You may be thinking of Andover which is a nice small town next to Columbia. Jay
