Poll: McMahon Leads Republicans In Run For U.S. Senate But Trails Democrats - Courant.com

Poll shows that Linda would single handedly defeat Shays if a vote were held today. But she would lose to a Democrat. She is expected to make a formal announcement within the next two weeks!

Thoughts?

Yeah I love her style and presence. She has a genuinely vested interest in the people of CT and our economy. No other Republican candidate for senate has come so close to winning than Linda has. 44% of the popular vote is quite a feat. I just kinda feel bad that she wasted $50 million on her campaign. I hope she has more money left for her 2012 campaign if she decides to run. Idk, maybe she's a billionaire.

I like Chris Shays, though I'm not a Republican.

He seems like a no-nonsense kind of guy.. I've always been somewhat of a C-SPAN junkie and I've seen him take on people of all stripes.

Nothing is more boring to me than a down-the-line partisan politician. It's just simply not possible for someone's principles to be completely in line with a party platform - anyone who pretends they are is hiding something.

Which also leaves out an important part of this which is that perhaps we over-emphasize a politician's principles and character -- after all, aren't they representing their constituents? That's who they should be tapped into - it's kind of feeding natural politician narcissism to just say 'you seem like you have the strength of your convictions, do what you want'. I've never understood why in the U.S. people look for things in their elected officials that are totally different than how every other country in the world votes. I guess the 'lone wolf hero' is so ingrained in our culture that we don't even expect even those elected to serve us, to actually SERVE us.

How can anyone in their right mind vote for Linda McMahon for Senator. She has served NO public office, has NO political service and is simply trying to buy her way into a high level office. She should first get some experience at least at some level of government before running for such an important office. Why not run for mayor? Why not State Legislator? Why not even dog catcher. No, those offices are too beneath her. Sorry but they could run John Rowland against her and I would vote for him before her. JMHO, Jay

While I don't support her, to answer your question: Because that's the system we have and the way it's designed. Anyone can run, and get in office. Being an elected politician is not supposed to be a career where you start in the mailroom, work you way to purchasing and then make a move for VP.

Hillary Clinton's first elected office was as Senator. I don't think there's anything wrong with going for the Senate as a first government job if your life experience and gravitas is big enough for that. In her case, it seems that what she has to offer is money. She can finance her campaign, and Shays can't finance his. Lots of people have become Senators this way. Not saying it's a good thing, but a rich businessperson looking to break into public office at the US Senate level is not an unusual thing.
