Since 1740 the Marlborough Tavern has been a fixture of this small town southeast of Hartford.
Operated off and on as a tavern and restaurant, the establishment has been host to presidents and even the French army during the Revolutionary War. But Saturday will be the Tavern's last day until a new owner is found.

1740 Tavern Becomes Victim of Recession | NBC Connecticut

I don't live in CT but I hate to see this happen and its happening all across the country.

I get so tired of seeing the same fast food joints, restaurant chains, Walmarts, Targets, and other companies that monopolize every friggin' town in this country.

Every place is starting to look the same.

I agree! I shop at non-chains and eat at the same as much as possible. I'll take a main street or downtown over a Walmart, mall or Chili's any day.

The Marlborough Tavern was a ticking time bomb. I actually live in town, and while it is sad to see it close, the food was atrocious at that place. I am shocked they were open as long as they were, though I think the bar crowd kept them afloat. It certainly wasn't the food. Hopefully someone with a much better kitchen staff comes in and buys the place. It is a charming building and, with the right people behind the restaurant, could be a smashing success.

MArlborough Tavern has had its ups and downs over the years. We use to go about 15 to 20 years ago and the food was decent. Then it changed slowly getting worse. I do not see it as a victim of the economy so much as a victim of bad management and poor quality. Jay

I'm sure it will be back in no time. It's not like they're tearing it down. This was just another case of a couple amateurs buying a place and assuming the location/name alone would carry it. Happens all the time in that business.

No offense but you couldn't be more wrong in this one.

The Marlborough Tavern is NOT closing because of the economy.

The owner raised the rent by $2000.00 a month to $9500.00 due to sewer upgrades mandated by the state as of July 2011 for grease trapping/remediation.

I'm actually glad the state has legislated for these traps (Most other states already have them in place. Over 40% of the sewer clogs in the state are grease related), it's the building owner here who is the real "bad guy".

I'm not guessing at this. I'm a member of several Marlborough business organizations and know a lot of locals in town. (I didn't want to drop the owners name for etiquette reasons.)

The article does note that this is not the first time this has happened; that it was "vacant" from 1979-85 as well.....that "other" recession (OK not by 1985 but still......).
