Looking at how many still exist, A&P must have been the supermarket in its day.
From a press release...Founded in 1859, A&P is one of the nation's first supermarket chains. The company operates 337 stores in eight states and the District of Columbia under the following trade names: A&P, Waldbaum's, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, Super Fresh, Sav-A-Center and Food Basics.
And now A&P is buying Pathmark. They seem to keep changing just under the consumer's radar.
We are new to the area and had shopped at MarketBasket (aka DeMuolas) in MA. Great prices, everything seemed to be a buck or two less expensive then Stop & Shop and they provided great selection and service. (no card required) Anything compare in southern conn?
In the Hartford area there is Highland Park Market. It has great meats and service but it is not cheaper than Stop & Shop.
There is also the great Stew Leonards in Norwalk, Danbury and now Newington. They may be coming to Orange as well but their store has received a lot of opposition from the locals. Stew Leonards has great prices and excellent quality so it is very popular. There is another thread on this Board discussing it. Jay
There is a Waldbaums or should I say A&P in West Hartford. It is located in Bishops Corner Shopping Center and it is undergoing a major interior remodel so maybe A&P is back again.
First on the question of Trader Joes, they recently expanded the Orange store by taking over the space the shoe store had next door.
On Waldbaums, the previous poster was correct, A&P acquired Waldbaums around 85 -87 (forget what year). I started working for Waldbaums in 91 and they had probably about 40 stores in CT. They tried to compete with Stop and Shop by opening a new store in line with how Super Stop and Shop runs it stores in North Haven CT around 1997. That store closed shortly there after. Since then they rolled all of the remaining stores into Super A&P's and then when the leases ran out on most of them they closed them. Last I saw the remaining stores are in Bridgeport, Berlin, Middletown, Branford, East Haven, Old Lyme and one or two other places. When I started with them there were two stores in my home town alone, both closed.
Their reputation is buying up a chain, closing most of the stores and keeping the few it sees as the best and closing the rest without trying to make them work. They have appointed store managers whose only jobs are to take over stores that are to close soon there after. He closes that one and he's off to close the next. Gives you the warm fuzzies when he shows up as your store manager.
