No surprise there, I suppose. It's unfortunate that people will probably lose their jobs as a result of this, but they'll get the majority from early retirements. At lease I hope so...

UTC will continue to be ultra vigilant in sizing their business according to the economic climate, they've always moved at the speed of light in doing this.

Keep that stock price climbing!

My husband actually saw a job posting for Sikorsky. I always find that weird in the midst of layoffs, but I'm sure it varies by job function. That said, I don't think we trust their stability enough for him to bother applying (though it would be an amazing commute!)

UTC no doubt is also in a not so subtle way, favoring lower cost regions regarding where not to cut. Its inevitable, and it makes seizing new opportunities for the region all the more vital.

There's even jobs out there where there's a "shortage" and they have trouble finding people. It's most commonly right now in certain very specialized tech functions. It used to be in math and science teachers (at least in inner city areas), but not so much now. Though I can tell you that many of the major tutoring chains have trouble getting p/t math people (partially because they pay crap).

The problem, 7 wishes, is UTC provides even less security than exists in general. Having dealt with them before (large supplier relationship) , I must admit they are the kind of corp I like in a 401k, but dislike as an American.

Yes! I feel that way about a lot of companies these days.

Lou Dobbs reported during the last Sikorsky strike a few years ago, UTC had purchased $21 million of vacant land in Georgia, and they habitually brag to analysts that their concentration of employees in low-cost states continuously increases, and they have also bragged that today, Sikorsky employs more o/s Ct than inside. None of that provides me (I have friends there) any warm and fuzy feelings regarding UTC stability in any high cost state.
