After about 5 years of constantly increasing rates, I'm going to start shopping. We've been using Nationwide and they have been fine, but I think I'm paying about 50% more than I was when I first signed up in early 2007.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good insurance co that can handle both car and homeowner's? And, preferably, won't increase every 6 months? I know Allstate still doesn't do homeowners in CT, so that's out.

Thanks!

State Farm hasnt raised rates in years on me... They do both but I use Allstate for autos.

Credit and history can affect your rate. I think Allstate for car insurance gives you back money if you dont have a claim in 6 months. Or was that Progressive?

Thanks for the reply - will check out State Farm rates. Allstate gives up to 5% back if you're claim free, but not sure it will be worth it if they don't do homeowner's. I had looked into splitting them and just getting the best rate for each, but found that bundling them together under the same carrier was better. Might not be the case, though, if car insurance premiums continue to skyrocket.

I saved like 30% going from Safeco to Geico. YMMV. Literally.

Allstate does homeowners and car insurance in CT - we have both. Their car insurance policy (if you have the gold or platinum coverage) has accident forgiveness as well as cash back every 6 months, but its not the cheapest out there. Homeowners premiums have been rising steadily over the past 3 years... my annual premiums since 2009 have been $890, $945 and $1087. When I called them about this last year, their answer was that several claims due to severe weather damage in CT had forced them to raise premiums. With Irene and the recent Oct snowstorm, the premiums can only go in one direction next year.

We've always been happy with GEICO for both.

Nish - Allstate doesn't do new homeowner's policies in CT. They apparently haven't in a few years, and are only considering coming back to the state.

Uconn / DandJ - will check into Geico and Amica. Thanks! I used Geico for car insurance before moving to CT and was reasonably happy with them. I didn't realize they also did homeowner's.

Their homeowners insurance is farmed out to a subsidiary company, but it's still part of GEICO. You'll also get a discount for having both of your insurance policies (car and home) with them.

We've been using state farm for both; with different houses and cars. Ive found them to be cheaper than our past companies (allstate, nationwide, metlife). State farm also does life and if you bundle the 3 you get additional discounts.
