Default proper pronunciation of new haven?

I say *NEW* Haven. My husband says New *HA*ven.

Which one of us is right? I think he has been listening to train conductorese on Amtrak a little too long.

I just say New Haven- both the 'N' and 'H' have equal hierarchy.

The second. All the commentators at the US Open pronounce it incorrectly.

Yeap. That is the way I say it too. I never hear anyone say it differently.

"New Haven" is two separate words. That's like saying which of the following three syllables in "two separate" does one accentuate.

New Haven is likely named after Newhaven on the coast of Sussex, England. In fact, early records from the New Haven Colony spell the name "Newhaven."

In England the "New" is accented. Most folks in Connecticut accent the "Ha". Ironically, most of the people I've heard from outside Connecticut accent the "New" as well.

I pronounce it like your husband (emphasis on the HA, not on the NEW).
