Couple new to CT currently living in Hartford. Problem is we need to relocate because one of us will be working in NYC on 70th Street and the other in Bloomfield. Please offer suggestions about where to live. We need to move soon.

Oh wow, that is going to be a VERY long commute for most likely both of you. I don't even know where to begin. What is your budget? Are you renting or buying?

Yikes- that's going to be be a very unenviable commute.

I would suggest you move to where you can take the Metro North train to NYC. Perhaps somewhere around Milford, Stratford or Fairfield depending on your budget & whether you want to rent or buy.

It would give you overall about an 1.5 hour commute to Bloomfield and equal or actually much longer to NYC, factoring in the additional time to get from home to train station and then from Grand Central back up to 70th.

You realize that these two places (Bloomfield and Manhattan) are about 120 miles apart. Even living half way means each of you would have a commute that would be over an hour. You might consider living in New Haven. One could take the train into Manhattan and the other could drive to Bloomfield. Still it will be a long commute for both of you. Jay

We intend to rent. We don't want to go over $1600 for a place. Right now we have a two bedroom in downtown Hartford for $1250. But we also own a home in another state so that is a factor as well

I don't think the commute should be that unbearable. I would echo what someone said above and go for Fairifled through New Haven on the New Haven line to Grand Central. You could then take 95 or the Merritt/Wilbur Cross up to the Hartford area.

$1600 is doable in these areas.

Commutes proportionate to money and viability of the jobs. If either of you is in danger of losing the job don't favor that location. If one of you can more easily find a new role in time don't favor the current location. From the shoreline Madison, Wallingford, new haven, Hamden there are regular buses to hartford then on to Bloomfield. Check the train (metro north) and bus (ct transit, easy street) schedules and go from there. Problem is real estate in those areas is expensive...of its not viable to travel and pay rent the job isnt worth it. Alternative if you have to do this is live apart durin the week...see if you can work a 4 day schedule to keep you at "home" 3 days a week.

A commute to NYC is not viable from any of the towns east or north of New Haven.
