I was going to note that too, there actually are many "northern", "wintry" areas that have 'late light' in winter because they are very far west in a time zone. An extreme example is parts of Michigan.

But a "closer to home" example is the Buffalo, NY area. When I visited my sister there last weekend, sunset was 8:33pm, this is actually about 2 minutes later than the late June/early July latest sunset of the year in NYC, and about 4 minutes later than the same in Hartford (I had looked up, for the same date sunset was about 8:05pm in Hartford and 8:10 in NYC. Of course sunrise is about 20-30 minutes later too.

So in winter even with all the snow they get, they still have daylight to about 5:30. The flip side though is the sun doesn't rise until almost 8am, which I can tell you from past visits there in the wintertime is actually pretty freaky, even though we "max out" at about 7:20am.

Before time zones were invented in 1883, everyone at the same latitude had the same sunrise and sunset time. With trains starting to make travel faster then, it produced the problem of having to change one's clocks every few miles so something had to be done.....

From August 1st to August 31st we lose over an hour of daylight.

I'd love to experience just 5 of daylight like Alaska does in December. I've had enough sun this summer. Maybe if it wasnt so dam humid I would find a way to tolerate it. But I really hate Spring and Summer around here.

I'm looking forward to some more moderate temperatures. In my Opinion, Labor Day to around mid-October are the nicest days of the year.

On the flip side, the sun rises at around the same time in the winter in CT as it does in FL.

In the end it all balances out to 12 hrs day and 12 hrs dark year round.
How is that possible if the sun rises at the same time, but sets at different times?

I love fall, winter and spring, wish it were more harsh in fact. I know that not everyone feels this way, I also know that that not everyone has the ability to move where the weather suits them the best. I just think that the weather is such a big part of life here so perhaps a move to a more mild climate would make you happier.

I think it would be different if you lived there. I did an Alaskan cruise with family a few years back and we did some salmon fishing with a local charter captain. We got to talking a little bit and I asked him how he handled the winter with the short daylight. He said it was awful and in fact many of his friends turn to drugs and alcohol in the winter because they can't cope.

Might be nice to experience the short daylight hours once or twice, but I don't think I'd want to spend a winter in Alaska.

I will be back up in CT in October for a couple of weeks and I am very much looking forward to it, especially the weather. The beautiful days and then the cool nights, just perfect Fall weather. Can't wait!
