Hi Everyone,

Around the Boston there are three major grocery chains

Market Basket
Shaws
Stop & Shop

And they go in that order from cheap to expensive. Anyone familiar with these chains who can tell me where I can get groceries at comparable prices to Market Basket? I mean around the Manchester area.

Thanks a bunch!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can find some good things at Aldi, but their selection is extremely limited. PriceRite is a subsidiary of ShopRite that has lower prices and a larger selection than Aldi. But like Aldi, it isn't a full service grocery store.

Whatever the case, any of the above 3 listed would be better than Shaw's. LOL. Good riddance to that chain.

I just realized now that there's a Big Y in Manchester. They aren't the "cheapest", but i've found my local Y to be pretty competitive overall.

There is also an Aldi on Silver Lane in East Hartford. It does have good prices but a limited selection of items. Shoprite on Spencer Street is about the cheapest around Manchester overall. I find Big Y to be pricier in most items I buy but they do have great sales.

There are no Price Rite supermarkets in Manchester. The closest are in Wetherfield, Willimantic or Windsor. There is however a Sav-a-lot on Broad Street where Shaw's use to be located. I am not sure how good their prices are though. Jay

Sorry , but anywhere is not too bad - if you get good at couponing.
I dont know why I spent a lifetime turning down free $ toward reducing food costs, but I've learned.
Yes it's a pain , but worth it. Im saving around 35-40% almost every time.

I agree with seymour, saving is probably more about meal planning, reducing waste, what you buy, freezing, couponing, etc., than where you shop.

If you find coupons for the stuff that you want to buy, it's great. My experience with using coupons for products that i've never tried before has been overwhelmingly negative. I usually end up "losing" money in the end.
