Unfortunate there's still a lot of NIMBYs in the city holding it back:

I read this article and the NIMBY's might be warranted in this case. The potential developer has a history of questionable maintenance on similar buildings and his proposal is to build micro apartments in the middle of a family oriented neighborhood. Micro apartments tend to attract transient residents so there is concern (rightfully so) that this could become a flop house. This is not what that neighborhood wants or needs. Plus the neighbors were right to question the cost estimates being provided. The developer is saying it will cost him $16.7 million for the project. There will be 37 units which means it will cost him over $450,000 per apartment. That is insanely expensive for 300 square feet units. I doubt anyone would provide financing for this. Still this was the only developer that has expressed interest in purchasing and redeveloping the former school so it might be the best the city can do with the property at this point. Jay

Exactly. There are zero other developers that responded and if the city does anything it'll cost the taxpayers.

Let him give it a shot. If he fails, that's business. Better than an empty building costing the city money.

Then again though, the city will have to live with what is placed there for a long time. New Haven is not known for just allowing random development without thinking carefully about the implications. It probably has one of the strongest big-city planning departments in the state. They have been laboring for years to make certain development is well thought out and appropriate. This does not appear to be. I would be surprised if the city accepts it but then again you never know. Jay

Unfortunately Fair Haven hasnt seen any of that development or interest, and this building is a bit of a white elephant.

385 apartments proposed for edge of troubled Dixwell and Newhallville neighborhoods. This is sure to meet some anti-gentrification opposition.
