I was pleased with our results. We were very high.
I was surprised that Bloomfield did so poorly. They were in the bottom 5 in several categories. I realize they have a significant number of minorities and some of Hartford's urban issues have spread across the line into the town, but it is a very nice well maintained community with good facilities and I believe there are a lot of residents there that care about their town. The town really needs to look closely at where their failures are and what, if anything, can be done about them. Jay

Please..Let Me Respond About Bloomfield
You are right on the money -Jay, Bloomfield is a great town with a low crime rate-
The town has not done a good job at making sure that the students in the schools are Bloomfield residents- Obviously if a student is caught using a home address and the resident is a part of this- they should be held responsible for tuition against their property taxes.
There are more foster kids in this town than anywhere in the state- now this part angers me- and I will appear to be horrible in saying this- but...my house obviously, as the rest of Bloomfield residents has just taken a hit because of these scores- now we have people all over town collecting extra money being foster parents- I am not a parent and I am getting taxed to death in this town- these folks get their check, to pay the same amount of taxes as me and they get the bonus-
Quality of life- Bloomfield has 2 sides to it- we have about 70% of the town that keeps the average income at 56,000 for the town- about 35 K above Hartford, but we have the other side- people who blast the hell out of their stereo for all the world to hear and once again- we have Town Hall sitting on their butts and doing nothing- there is no noise law- Bloomfield refuses to pass it- You can leave cars all over your lawn- just so you cover them...
So, in the end- you have a town that is 40% white -which also defies why the scores are down- but then- no- but who can't send their kids to the schools because a group of people are either getting paid by the system or who are parents not keeping up their end of the bargain, making their kids be involved in their studies-
Town hall, meanwhile, sits by ...it is the wierdest shame-

Are you serious? Am I feeding a troll? Clearly, you're not a parent, because if you were, you'd know that the amount of money you get for foster parenting is not 'extra money'-every foster parent I know spends it all and then some, on the kids! What is the 'bonus' these folks are getting on your taxes? And, they pay taxes too-and so did someone else when YOU were in school.
I don't know the source of Bloomfield's CMT scores troubles but it surely is not foster kids.

I doubt that the number of foster kids would really impact the test results enough to impact test scores. Same for students use false addresses to get into the system. Bloomfield is not what I would call a "poor" community. It has a strong tax base (Cigna, Kaman, Copaco, etc.) and like I said seems to be very well maintained. It will be interesting to see if there is a reaction to this. Jay

Do you think 305 is a good score for reading on the CMT (I feel that it is a wee low for the Asian community- and considering I got 350+ in math/writing)

The Bloomfield test scores were both an embarrassment and disguting-
I believe that if you move to a community...and I hope that this makes sense...you have to keep up your ned of the bargain ...what I mean:
1. )Keep your property neat
2.) Do not be a nuisance (noise, etc)
3.) Value education-
If I move my children from a tough area-I need to relaize that there are things that make a small town special - low crime comes from respect of others property and being- respect comes from the home- respecting teachers and education is very important...
We are not rich people, however, if we were looking for a home in Bloomfield- I would be an upstanding citizen and my children would do well in school-a community needs to have its members value the town-
Additionally, the town itself is not that big- where are the new arrivals coming from? Blue Hills is relatively small-
