Hi,

There is a possibility that we might be relocating to CT in the next few months due to work. Work place will be in Plainville. We have 2 kids - 5 yrs and 2 yrs. I would like to know about the schools are in the area -

- is it worth it to pay for Private school ?
- Also, if we do go for private schools - I would like to go for one that is non-religious. I don't see many in that category just surfing through the net. Can anyone suggest good private schools in that category?
- What is the best school district for public schools?
-What is the closest area that is affordable with commute /private and public schools?

Thanks much for your input

Southington is a nice town, with good schools. You'll be fine. The private schools that are not religious are generally uber expensive prep schools like Renbrook in West Hartford. Browser Not Supported

Famington, Avon, Canton, West Hartford also have great schools. I like Farmington for that option, and it puts you near West Hartford and all its restaurants, shopping, parks and activity. It may be slightly more than Southington though.

Thanks for your reponse. Are there any religious schools near by in the above areas where religion is not emphasized ? Also, in which of those towns, can we find a nice single family home for less than 400K in a nice area? Renbrook seems good..very expensive - is it really worth it? Are the kids that go there very well advanced compared to the public schools?

I don't know if it's worth it go to private schools, as some of those towns have some of the best public schools in a state known for pretty good public schools....

The public schools here in Connecticut are among the best in the country. As long as you move to a town with a well performing school system you do not need to go private unless you want your children to either have a religous education or you want them to go to an elite type school.

If this is not the case but you still want good schools then I would recommend you look for a town that has schools that perform above the state averages on the Connecticut Mastery and Connecticut Academic Performance Tests. Use the website below to find these towns.

State Department of Education - CEDaR

In the Plainville area there are a number of towns with schools that are considered to be among the best in the state. Farmington, West Hartford, Avon and Simsbury would be great choices. Which of these to look at depends on your budget, what you expect for your money and the type of community you want to live in. Let us know more so we can direct you to the best town. Jay

Any secular private school (including religious schools in name only) are huge money ($20,000-$35,000). The ordinary Catholic and Christian schools are not better than the public schools and many times worse.

I agree that you don't need a private school if you choose one of the towns with top-performing schools, Ct. suburbs generally offer an excellent education. Unless you want a prep school or religion-based it just isn't necessary and a private school might not be any better than the public. In addition to Jay's link, there are a couple of others that you can look at that compares school districts:

Thanks much for your response. From the rankings from the above site, looks like West Simsbury is the best school district follwed by Farmington and Avon.

Anyone from the first hand experience - can you comment on the best schools from the above towns ?

Thanks

I think you are splitting hairs on the "best schools." Most towns (not the bigger cities) will offer solid public schools. Many towns will offer great schools. You can't go wrong with schools in any of the above listed towns, as well as many others in the state. No one will say that your child will be miles ahead by attending school in Avon vs. Farmington (and if they do say that, they're full of it). Don't get yourself worked up about it, they are all great schools, the rest is up to the student.
