Default a good place to live with family

Hey guys I need help. I'm thinking about moving to Connecticut this summer. I currently live in Oregon but want to be closer to my parents in New York without living in the city. I know this question was asked in the past. I just want something recent. To know about some good places that are family oriented, decent schools, affordable rent, ect. Anything helps. Thanks

All of CT is family oriented, most of it except the biggest cities have decent schools. No problem there.

Your big sticking point is affordability and employment. Where you might live is going to be extremely dependent upon what your income is and what you can afford.

What's you idea of affordable ? Where would you be looking for a job?

Connecticut is one of the most expense states in the country and the closer you get to NYC, the more expensive it gets.

I really like Milford and Bethel for towns that are a little further from the city, but close enough for convenient trips, lots of activity and things to do for families, and with decent schools and affordable rent. As you start to get closer to the city, it starts to get really expensive - and if you go further out, then it becomes a pain to go into NYC.

I'd also add Stratford and Shelton to the consideration set.

Just my $.02.

We recently moved from Bend to Fairfield (the town). CT is not OR, but in many ways Fairfield is a lot like Bend in terms of conveniences (without the isolation--which was both good and bad) Both are about the same size and where Bend has the mountains, Fairfield has beaches and the Long Island Sound. Plus when you need a big city fix, NYC is a little over an hour away by train where Portland was 2 1/2 hours by car over the mountains.

I think you need to give us some more information. Do you want to live near New York. Fairfield County in southwest Connecticut is beautiful but is one of the most expensive parts of the country. If you want a city a bit similar to Portland, you might consider living near New Haven. It has the largest group of bicyclists to work outside of the northwest. Because of Yale there is a lot of activity and it is growing a lot. Hartford is also a great city. It too has very nice suburbs that are great places to raise a family. I suggest you look at your employment options and let us know what looks best for you. Then we can make recommendations on places to look. Jay

I don't agree. What makes you think there are so much better places to live? Jay

And that makes you think Connecticut is no good??? Still don't understand why. I do not know any southern state that has the quality of life we have here in Connecticut. Also remember visiting a place on vacation is NOT like living there. Sure it may be great to lounge around a pool in the warm weather but what about trying to maintain a yard or that pool when the heat is pusing 100? Not fun. JMHO, Jay
