We are considering a move to CT from Westchester. One of the areas we are thinking about is Danbury. Does anyone have any information about the jewish population there? How many synagogues etc..

Also if anyone else can recommend some CT towns with a substantial jewish population.

Thanks,
ebl

Hi ebl-

The towns with the largest Jewish population in CT would be the suburbs just west of New Haven (Woodbridge, Orange) and West Hartford.

I don't know much about the Jewish population in Danbury.

There's a large Jewish population in Westport, too. We lived in Norwalk, near Westport, and had our pick of lots of different synagogues.

There are several synagogues in Danbury I know from just driving around. Your best bet for more information is to go through the phone book and call them for more information.

Danbury area's Jewish population has hovered around 3,000 for a while. The community is quite old, and there were a lot of farmers around that area in the early 1900s. The Newtown congregation had a lot of them. The Marcus Dairy is from one of the more famous Jewish families around there. Its probably going to grow in the future..nice areas and a lot more laid back and affordable than lower FFD county.

I know this is over a decade late, but I figured Id answer just in case anyone looks for this information. There are two small synagogues in Danbury, the United Jewish Center (Reform) and Congregation Bnai Israel (Conservative). the United Jewish Center has a fairly large building but is currently a pretty small congregation. Im sure it was larger in the past. Congregation Bnai Israel has a tiny building but is more vibrant. There was also once a Jewish day school, Maimonides Academy of Western Connecticut, for preschool through grade 5, but it closed several years ago.
