Relocating to CT from NC
Hi,
We would be relocating to CT next month. My husband's job would be in Windsor. Can somebody suggest some good apartments aound the area with good elementary schools nearby, as my son would be starting Kindergarden next year. We were looking into Simsbury and Avon as the schools nearby were good, according to greatschools.net. But when going thro some previous posts, i understand that Avon is a more hyped area. So can somebody suggest some area, with less travel to Windsor and good schools nearby too.
Thanks.

I would suggest South Windsor, just across the Connecticut river to the east-less then 15 minutes away from Windsor. South Windsor is a great town to live in, Great places to eat, shopping, and great schools. A much better commute then Avon and Simsbury, with many nice townhouses and apartments.

akpreets - Welcome to Connecticut. I am sure you will like it here. Windsor is located north of Hartford, so I would generally stay on that side of the city. The apartment complexes here tend to be small and limited to larger towns or cities. For the best schools, I would avoid Bloomfield and Windsor. Schools in these towns have issues.
You mentioned Avon and Simsbury, which are very nice upscale towns with excellent schools. Apartments there are limited but there may be condos available. Check craigslist.com or a local realtor for listings. Avon does have Avon Place which is a rental complex. Other options for very good to excellent schools would be West Hartford or South Windsor (as Skytrekker mentioned). Hope this helps, Jay

South Windsor is a good option but does not have any apartment complexes. There are a few large complexes in Manchester, just over the town line. Vernon and Ellington both offer luxury townhouse apartments (Hockanum Crossing and Deer Valley Townhomes). You may find condos and homes for rent in South Windsor as well as Avon/Simsbury as options in those towns.

If by "issues" you mean a significant population of African-American students in Windsor, then yes, there are "issues." If by "issues" you mean the schools are of poor quality, then, no, there are not "issues." Windsor is pretty, affordable, and has long been one of the best-run towns in the Hartford area.

Windsor schools perfrom under the state averages on the Connecticut Mastery Test scores but have reasonable class sizes (around 20 students per class). Bloomfield schools have performed near the bottom of the Mastery Test results in several key areas. Jay

akpreets: What kind of budget are you working with? That helps to point you in the right direction as this area has a lot of diversity in housing and demographics.
South Windsor is a good bet as others have said.

I am looking around a rent range of $1200 - $1500. Also I want to be near good Elementary schools, as my son will be starting Kindergarden next year. My husband would be working in Windsor, so his commute daily during peak hours should not be too bad.
How is it about renting townhomes / homes from private people? How would the maintenance issues be tackled? Can you please list the advantage and disadvt for renting from private people. I have always lived in apartments and dont know much about renting from private people.
How is the commute from West Hartford to Windsor?
Thanks
