Canton may be called a bedroom community that is semi rural. It is not rural like Ashford CT.

It is quiet here, about 6,000 people, one traffic light, a couple of restaurants, no fast food (well there is a Subway and Dunkin Donuts), a small food market, a post office...basically there is stuff in town if you need them in a pinch but most people travel to the big supermarkets in Glastonbury, East Hampton, or Colchester, depending what side of town you live on. The town has a rural feel but you are a 15-20 minute drive to just about anything you would need. It is mostly rolling hills, lots of woods (state land) around, and most houses are on lots that are well over an acre with some privacy. There is a lake here for town resident's use and is nice to go swimming in the summer.

I really like this area and would include Hebron as another contender. I would say Colchester too but from what I have heard Marlborough and Hebron's schools are far superior to Colchester's. Hebron and Marlborough each have their own elementary school then have a regional school district for middle and high school.

I don't have any pictures, but just imagine rolling hills covered by trees...that is pretty much Marlborough in a nutshell.

Built a house in Colcheter 3 years ago and absolutely love the town. Marlborough and Hebron are also beautiful places to live. We considered Marlborough but decided against it when we realized our kids would have to go to RHAM some day. I am not knocking RHAM, however, I read one time it took 9 refrendums to get their budget passed. This can happen often when dealing with a regional school district. Granted, Bacaon Academy is no Glastonbury, however, becasue we are paying so much in taxes to begin with it feels like we have a bit more control becasue our kids are going to a school in our town. Also, the board of education, selectmen and others answer directly to the voters of Colchester

I recently moved to Middlefield - about a 25 minute commute to Hartford traveling 91 north. I have found the traffic to be very reasonable - I get on the highway about 7:15am. The town is great - very rural, close knit community about 4,000 people - excellent schools shared with Durham. Hilly, farms, some open areas, some wooded, lake, 2 golf courses and Lyman Orchards with small market and seasonal fruit. No fast food or any real shopping for that matter - but Middletown, Rocky Hill & Meriden are not far and have plenty to offer in that capacity. I don't miss the shopping options at all. There are several lots available that I've seen listed on Realtor.com. The website could probably show you lots for sale in most of the previous towns mentioned also.

Middlefield I think would fit the bill perfectly. Lyman Orchards is great and has a really nice golf course. Middletown is 10 minutes down the road, not far at all and Hartford is very close as well.

That is a beautiful, rural area. We have a friend who lives in Woodstock. Several years ago during one of our visits to him, we were out driving and couldn't believe our eyes, it was the aurora borealis/northern lights. The only time we've ever seen them. We got out and watched, we were next to a field, just one of many fields there. I am not sure how the schools are there, though. It's a small town, maybe 7000-8000 residents. It's very quiet and peaceful. The NE corner of Connecticut is about the least developed in Connecticut. Frankly, I find the rest of Connecticut over-developed, especially Fairfield County where we live. I am not a fan of development, preferring rural areas.

To me, Bristol is not even remotely rural.

Litchfield County has some somewhat rural areas, and the scenery is quite beautiful.

But it's all a matter of opinion and personal taste.
