The problem is that we are fighting a global economic slowdown. Businesses are not hiring due to lack of end demand. Many of Connecticut's companies have large international exposure and their competitiveness is not being primarily hampered by Connecticut's tax structure. Additionally, states are cannibalizing each other for a slice of a shrinking pie of existing companies as opposed to promoting new growth and development. This results in a race to the bottom competition in terms of wages and standard of living for the majority of residents.

Obviously high taxes are not helpful to a company's cost structure nor are they helpful to the employees and local customers. Zero-based budgeting should implemented and care should be given to accepting federal funds for projects that require local structural changes to state government and/or require a sizable state contribution/participation. The use it or lose it mentality is costly. Kind of similar to winning a free multi-million dollar home but having to pay $900,000 you don't have in taxes. The key difference is you can't sell the house in the state's case.

Malloy's priority should be to ensure responsible oversight and supervision of state assets, services, and employees. A bipartisan review of state services and agencies should be conducted to identify ways to eliminate/phase out duplicity and waste. Social Service reform needs to be done in conjunction with health care and education as these areas are interrelated and changes made to one without consideration of the other will not yield the best results.

HA! This is the thing that 99% of Americans want and none of us will fully get from the state or the nation. Bipartisanship rarely exists in politics. Shays and Lieberman did some bipartisan work but not enough. For CT to get back on track you don't need bipartisanship; you just need Malloy to say to himself "what can we cut?" and then cut it.

In all seriousness, can we keep the partisan cognitive restructuring to a minimum? I know every Democrat is evil incarnate and every conservative is the greatest thing since sliced bread, however, to single out Malloy, without discussing the financial situation that he inherited from his Republican predecessors is a bit ingenuous.
Hardly true. Elsewhere I have praised Cuomo, who is left of Malloy, for his fiscal honesty and prudence in taking corrective action with more entrenched unions, btw. I'm also a big fan of Tn's ex Democratic gov Bredesen, and a not so big fan of the present GOP Governor here. Its not about party; its about who buries their head in the sand (IMO Malloy) and who reacts to changing conditions well.
