Also, why I can't believe it's all the ocean is I would think JFK would have the same effect and it often has slightly lower nighttime lows than LGA or even Central Park (it usually has higher nighttime humidities though, which does reflect the ocean).
That does surprise me that LGA is often warmer than AC or Ocean City, MD at night. Perhaps as you say it is the urban heat island effect. The fact that the newer AC Airport (10 miles inland) gets much colder than the AC Airport almost right on the Atlantic is not surprising at all however – the sand barrens are east of AC, and that dry sand heats/cools very fast. Their is often a frost in the Pine barrens long before the coastal cities like Cape May and AC . Still, as I say, so many things go into local temp measurements (elevation, exposure, local terrain…etc) its mind boggling. Who really knows why?

As far as Groton vs Tweed…maybe you missed me on that one: I was trying to say that often in winter, Groton/NL Airport AND Tweed Airport (a block from the water) report temps 20 to 25 F warmer than those high terrain areas in western and northwestern CT. Both of these areas are far removed from the urban heat island (esp Groton) that Hartford, Bridgeport, NYC…etc have. So I think their warm temps is almost totally due to their low elevation and oceanside location. I watch winter lows very often to see what my plants have to deal with, and I'm always 8 to 12 F (and at times 18 F) warmer than locations like Danbury, Waterbury, Torrington...etc. My near sea level elevation and ocean location vs the higher elevation, inland areas of west central and northwest CT is the main reason for the big temp difference.

Just as a funny note (see my post above)…I went to Ocean Beach (in New London) today for a few hrs to walk the boardwalk, then went on the beach for a bit, the sun was blazing and if felt hot. I thought surly today was hotter than yesterday, maybe 78, maybe 84 F ?. Yet when I went home I was shocked to see that the high at the NWS reporting station at GNL Airport only hit 72 F at 2:00 PM. Still nice, but it felt 10 to 15 F warmer in the midday sun and on the hot sand.

Yes, you can see the UHI effect well now. Also, don't leave out Hartford, note how they are only 5 F cooler at this hr than Bridgeport (and SST are 71 F off Bridgeport right now). Hartford has a good UHI going for it too. I'm thinking a low of about 48 - 52 F here tonight, so maybe the NWS stations in Bridgeport, Tweed (New Haven), and Groton/NL will see 50 F or so.

Check out the update. I guess the previous map didnt have the 8:50pm temp update.

New update in 15 minutes but look at Hartford now. With LGA still at 71.
Danbury dropped to 53 with this update.

Inland stations were actually not much different than coastal stations today in terms of daily highs...lol:

Hmmm.

Maybe something is wrong...that 71 F looks like much higher than anywhere in the Tri-State area. I would wait till morning to see if area temps fall in line closer. If LGA ends up more than say 7 - 9 F warmer than our coastal stations (Bridgeport/New Haven/GNL) then perhaps their readins have some issue. I find it hard to think that even at this hr Hartford is at 59 F while LGA is at 71 F (11 F warmer).

But then look at Boston (66 F now) so who knows....

One other note...at this rate of fall, maybe you were right, tonight might just be colder than that 51 F Bridgeport had a few nights ago (thur I think ?).

I dont think BDR will go below 53 tonight. Maybe. They are now at 62 so another 4 degree drop since last update. http://w1.weather.gov/data/obhistory/KBDR.html

LGA dropped to 70. Will recap in morning.

LGA:70 http://w1.weather.gov/data/obhistory/KLGA.html
HFD: 58 http://w1.weather.gov/data/obhistory/KHFD.html

12 degree difference now.

Edit:::: White Plains is also 12 degree temperature difference from LGA and they are closer than Hartford. LOL!!

Default 9/17/12 Morning Temps

Thats 1.

I believe one more night like this in September. I actually got the stove on with windows open.

I'm surprised to see 39 degrees at Taunton, MA.

Wow, 39 F at Taunton! I fell to 47.9 F (north side)....53.8 F (south side) last night. Is that map above the peak lows last night? - if so a bit shocked to see places on the island fell to near 50 F. Looks like Bridgeport fell to 53 F.
